George R.R. Martin Wants to Discuss Everything Wrong with House of the Dragon, and Fans Aren’t Having It!

Over the years, George R.R. Martin has used his personal blog to offer updates on a range of topics, including the production of House of the Dragon, his long-awaited novel Winds of Winter, and various other musings. However, this marks the first time his tone has taken a turn towards addressing the HBO prequel House of the Dragon, and by the looks of it is going to be something big, as he noted on Not A Blog,

I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… but I need to do that too, and I will. Not today, though. TODAY is Zozobra’s day, when we turn away from gloom

Martin’s recent critique might surprise some, given his earlier praise for House of the Dragon, he lauded the spectacular dragon battle in Episode 4, The Red Dragon and the Gold, on his blog. Yet, he also pointed out a notable error: the show used a four-legged Targaryen sigil instead of the correct two-legged version. With mixed reviews for Season 2, fans are now eagerly anticipating Martin’s latest blog post to uncover more of his thoughts.

Will George R.R. Martin Ever Finish Writing The Winds of Winter?

The Winds of Winter is the eagerly awaited sixth novel in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. It has been over a decade since he began working on it in 2012. Since then, Martin has openly discussed the various challenges he’s faced in bringing the book to completion. Talking about the book on the Bangcast podcast, he said,

I have like 1,100 pages written, but I still have hundreds more pages to go. It’s a big mother of a book for whatever reason. Maybe I should’ve started writing smaller books when I began this, but it’s tough.

Most recently, George R.R. Martin visited The Oxford Writers’ House for a talk earlier this month. During his appearance, he also touched on the progress of The Winds of Winter, sharing insights into his efforts to finish the book. He said,

That’s something that I would envy, but I’ve never done that and I never could’ve done it, even now. Believe it or not, I am not taking all that time to write Winds of Winter just because I think I’m Gene Wolfe now. I would’ve loved to have it finished years ago, but yeah, that’s the big thing I think I would change.

The Winds of Winter is set to be the longest book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, so it’s no surprise it’s taking its sweet time.

Martin noted how writer Gene Wolfe managed to spend six years on his novel before publication, thanks to a steady gig as an editor that kept his family afloat while he wrote on weekends. For Martin and other full-time writers, however, this luxury isn’t on the table, crafting epic tales is their bread and butter, making long, uninterrupted writing stretches a bit of a fantasy in itself.
