Agatha All Along is the latest show in the MCU. It takes place about three years after WandaVision and follows Agatha Harkness as she breaks free from her magical prison and goes on a journey along the Witches’ Road to regain her powers.

The show dives into a lesser-known part of the MCU—the world of magic and the occult. It also brings in some key characters for the MCU’s future, like Lady Death, Wiccan, and Jennifer Kale.

The show’s creator, Jac Schaeffer, also worked on WandaVision and Captain Marvel (uncredited). Her work in the MCU has been highly praised, thanks to her amazing attention to detail.

Recently, Schaeffer spoke with Decider about some of the show’s details and shared that Taylor Swift was actually a big influence on the project. Schaeffer discussed the music that inspired her as she worked, including Taylor Swift, whom she describes as a “storyteller.” While many artists inspired her writing, Schaeffer said Swift’s influence was especially strong.

For me, writing this — like during this sort of process, I love Haim. I think that those three sisters are very witchy. Kathryn [Hahn] listens to a lot of Bjork — I love Bjork as well, sort of later stage. I listen to a lot of Taylor Swift because she’s a storyteller and I find that very inspiring when I’m trying to write. As I listen to her songs, it makes me want to write. It’s sort of like a trigger for writing.

The band BoyGenius was another big inspiration for Agatha’s love story with Rio Vidal (played by Aubrey Plaza). BoyGenius is a popular three-woman group with a strong following in the queer community. The band—featuring Julian Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus—is known for its alternative pop sound, which fit well with the intense, playful energy between the two characters.

Boygenius was a big one while I was working on this show, oh man. Boygenius with the Agatha-Rio love story. But then also with like some — a little bit of Metallica in there.

The relationship between Rio and Agatha was one of the show’s most interesting parts, and Schaeffer talked a lot about it in another interview. The showrunner shared that they spent a lot of time discussing the pair’s first meeting, and at one point, even thought about making Rio the father of Nicholas.
