During an interview, Colin Farrell revealed that he would have ended Sofia Falcone’s storyline differently in the finale of The Penguin.

Many tragedies exist within the universe of the Batman. From the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents to Jason Todd’s painful descent into becoming an anti-hero, and even Mr. Freeze’s devotion to his wife leaving him cold and empty, it is safe to say that this world is full of pain. This has been perfectly represented in Colin Farrell’s The Penguin, encapsulating just how colorless and dark Gotham can get.

The final episode of the series took this a little too far, leaving audiences feeling empty by the time it was over. During a recent interview, Farrell specifically talked about Sofia Falcone’s fate in the finale. It would seem that as tragic as it was, the actor wished for a different ending for her character.
Sofia Falcone and the Tragedy of Madness
In the final few moments of Sofia Falcone’s freedom, she stands tall with Oz Cobb’s gun behind her head, accepting her fate. Being told that she is going to hell, she prepares herself for her death with an odd satisfaction running through her veins. She led a painful life that could not be any worse for what was in store for her after her passing.

As she waits for the gun to fire, she is met with the police, who actually take her to hell- bringing her back to Arkham Asylum. The ending was painful in the highest way possible, with Sofia being reduced to exactly what she was running away from, her forced reputation as ‘The Hangman’, and being back to where she lived out some of the most painful moments in her life.
During a recent interview, Colin Farrell spoke on the ending of the series during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Looking at things from his perspective, he pointed out that Oz was a man full of trickery, not being aware of his own next moves. He pointed out that this would lead to a level of honesty in rare moments.
Oz is someone whose left hand almost doesn’t know what his right hand is doing. He’s so full of trickery. He’s so full of the art of manipulation, and there are moments that cross into honesty. I think he did have feelings for Sofia. I think he was protective of Sofia. In episode eight, I get why sending Sofia back to Arkham, theoretically, in an interesting way, is crueler than killing her.

With what he did to Sofia, he pointed out that even though he cared for her, many could look at what he did to her as being cruel in the highest regard. Knowing that she would have rather died than go back to Arkham and still forcing her to somewhat made sense to Farrell.
Colin Farrell Would Have Rather Killed Sofia Falcone
Colin Farrell then took a turn with his thoughts on Sofia Falcone’s death in The Penguin finale, revealing what he thought should have happened to her. He mentioned that, although he understood why the story went the way that it did, he could not help but wish differently for her character.

He mentioned that while her ending was poetic, he believed it to be foolish from a practical perspective. Considering all that she did in a short span, Farrell believed that it would have made better sense for her character to have been killed off rather than being left alive. Since Arkham Asylum is better known for escapes than keeping their patients/inmates in, it would be very easy for Falcone to come out and cause trouble again.
I understand that argument. I don’t necessarily buy it after the danger and the threat that she’s presented herself to be — which is incredibly impressive and forceful. I think Oz would put a bullet in her head. But that wasn’t what they wanted to do at the end of the show. So I went with it.
Farrell mentioned that, with this in mind, he would have preferred if Oz had killed her. However, since this wasn’t what happened, he decided to go with the ending that the writers went with. While the actor does have a point from an objective perspective, one cannot deny that the ending Sofia got was a lot more painful than what she could have gotten from Farrell’s view.
The Penguin is available for streaming on Max.
