While she is not a stranger to controversy, actress Sydney Sweeney has gradually risen to become one of the top stars in the industry at the moment. The actress has consistently played complicated characters who are wronged while also being a bankable star. One of her breakout roles has been Cassie Howard in Euphoria.

While Cassie is her most popular character, the second season of the show saw Cassie’s arc tumble to a love-lorn teenager who betrays her best friend for a guy. Despite being a huge tumble, Sweeney actually spoke about another character of hers that received the most amount of hate.

While she had her first taste of success with the show Everything Sucks!, Sydney Sweeney began her tryst with complex roles in the HBO show Sharp Objects. She played the role of the antagonist Alice and shared screen space with Amy Adams in the miniseries. She was also in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

After being called the next Shailene Woodley due to her frequency in projects, Sweeney went on to feature as Eden in The Handmaid’s Tale. The show is centered around a dystopian society where a totalitarian government forces women to be in slavery as handmaids. It starred Elizabeth Moss in the lead as June.

Sydney Sweeney mentioned that her role was extremely hated by fans as she came in between the show’s lead couple Nick and June. She said to Nylon that people approached her and mentioned that they hated her character,

When I was filming it, I knew people were going to dislike Eden because she took Nick away from June. But I had no idea that they were going to hate her this much. A lot of people call her evil and say that she has some secret plan, and I was just so shocked.

Like, poor Eden… But someone came up to me once, and they’re like, ‘I hate your character’ and I said, ‘Thank you.’ If you hate her, then that means she’s doing her job.

Despite the hate, Eden still becomes a victim of the show’s system when she is killed after eloping with her boyfriend as she is considered a sinner by the Gilead regime.

Fame has been a complex topic to cover in the glitz and glamor of show business. Many celebrities have lost their way when given fame and have become controversial. Sydney Sweeney, who is currently riding a high wave, mentioned long ago that she found it difficult to find true friends once she became a working actor.

The actress, who rose to international fame for playing Cassie Howard in the HBO teen drama Euphoria, mentioned that tight schedules and the constant attention made it difficult to trust people around her and that many of the friendships were fleeting. She said to Nylon,

You lose friends, you learn some are fake friends. I think that’s been one of my challenges right now. It’s kind of lonely because I’m traveling all over. I’m never in the same place for too long, and you make the most amazing friends on one set, and then you go to another, and you start all over again, and it’s lonely sometimes.

The actress also addressed her comparisons to Shailene Woodley, saying that while she was honored by the comparison, she wanted to be the next Sydney Sweeney.

The Handmaid’s Tale is available to stream on Hulu as of August 17, 2024.
