Yesterday, we reported that a new Star Wars trilogy is being made. Deadline says these movies could be episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, which started with George Lucas’s first Star Wars film in 1977.
That film, along with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, changed blockbuster movies forever. Lucasfilm has teamed up with Simon Kinberg, who has worked with them before, including co-creating the ‘Star Wars Rebels’ TV series and helping with ‘The Force Awakens.’
He has also worked on other big franchises, writing and producing the ‘X-Men’ movies and the ‘Logan’ spinoff with Hugh Jackman, directed by James Mangold. Kinberg also produced the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies and was an executive producer for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (2024).
While this may seem like an exciting new chapter for Star Wars, fans aren’t so sure, and once again Kathleen Kennedy is facing criticism for things she said before. A couple of years ago, Kathleen Kennedy said (via The Hollywood Reporter) that continuing to follow George Lucas’s original storytelling would be a mistake.
She suggested the franchise should move on from the Skywalker saga, but now it seems we might be getting Episode 10 and more.
Just staying within the construct of George’s storytelling, to keep chipping away at that, I think would be wrong.
The Star Wars sequels with Daisy Ridley as Rey got mixed reviews from fans. Some enjoyed the action and new characters, but many were unhappy with the story.
Fans especially didn’t like how Rey’s character was portrayed, feeling she was too powerful without enough background or growth. They also felt upset about how legacy characters like Luke Skywalker were treated, with some believing his character was mishandled.
Now, it looks like we might be getting more sequels, but the reaction to this news hasn’t been very positive.
Throw me your thoughts on the New Star Wars Trilogy announcement that is set to be episodes “10 11 and 12.” With Simon Kinberg as the writer and producer. This will be yet another trilogy led by Kathleen kennedy…………… pic.twitter.com/EM3xGiM5Ck

How do people fail upward in Hollywood? Is Kathleen Kennedy out of her gawd damned mind? Simon Kinberg…THE Simon Kinberg, writer of such classics as ‘X3-The Last Stand’, ‘X-men-Apocalypse’ & ‘Dark Phoenix’, Fucking ‘Fant4stic’, is writing a mother flipping ‘Star Wars’ trilogy?! https://t.co/IteCnT9vNs

This was actually somewhat exciting until I read this sentence:
“Kinberg will write the trio and produce them with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy”
I have a bad feeling about this…https://t.co/2GAoBGe3GC#StarWars

I don’t trust Simon Kinberg at all with Star Wars especially after he messed up The X-Men badly with Dark Phoenix that Deadpool & Wolverine had to fix his mess! Lucasfilm needs to get rid of Kathleen Kennedy as soon as possible! https://t.co/iQowUhWLA1

Disney’s Lucasfilm has utterly ruined Star Wars. Lay it to rest and leave it alone. Fire Kennedy, decanonize the crap fest you’ve already churned out, get George Lucas back. That’s how you fix this.
And HOW does Kinberg keep getting work?!?! pic.twitter.com/xwkZQbhDZ3

Pass.
Kinberg is a decent director, but anyone under Kennedy’s thumb has directives to be woke, shallow and lazy.
Star Wars is a retired franchise now. https://t.co/0ZrA7B1R0q— 𝐂𝐉™ Follow me on IG/BlueSky (@CardiacDrop) November 8, 2024
It’s hard to find a positive reaction to this announcement, but we don’t know all the details about Kinberg’s deal. It might be a completely different project unrelated to the original trilogy.
Even if the movies end up being good, Kennedy’s reputation has already made it likely that they’ll receive negative reviews, unfortunately.
