Star Wars: The Acolyte was officially canceled a few days ago, sparking mixed reactions within the community. Some fans were hoping to see Osha’s and Qimir’s stories continue, while others are eager to move on from what they see as a disappointing endeavor.
The show struggled with low quality and viewership, despite its inflated budget. While the action scenes and two significant cameos in the season finale were highlights, they weren’t enough to save the series as a whole.
The exact reason for The Acolyte‘s cancellation was never officially confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm, but insider reports suggest what many already suspected: low viewership combined with a high production cost led to its demise.
Despite this, several social movements have emerged in a last-ditch effort to “save” the show. Hashtags like #SaveTheAcolyte and #RenewTheAcolyte have been trending on X, and a petition on Change.org aiming to convince Disney to reverse their decision has already garnered over 49,000 signatures.
While similar campaigns have succeeded in reviving other canceled shows and movies, it’s unlikely to work in this case, especially with Disney reassessing its release strategy, as we’ve previously analyzed.
In response to the support for The Acolyte, a counter-movement has also emerged. Just a few days ago, a petition to de-canonize The Acolyte was launched, though it currently has fewer signatures than the effort to bring the show back.
Like so many fans of Star Wars, I found the show the acolyte absolutely frustrating. For some, it might’ve been The abysmal writing, the ever-changing character, motivations, or the awkward cinematography and strange jump cuts. The show was completely misdirected. For others could be the multiple ways the show breaks canon, jangles keys of established characters damaging them in the future or the way the show makes the prophecy of the chosen one completely insignificant. Help me show Disney that we want to reset the prequel era back to George’s original vision that I know so many of us love.
The Acolyte initially conflicted with established canon in several ways, but these loose ends were eventually tied up in the final episodes, as no one survived to recount the tale of a Sith Lord roaming the galaxy over a hundred years before Darth Maul’s emergence.
However, fans were also disappointed that Osha’s and Mae’s stories were essentially carbon copies of Anakin’s journey.
Regardless of whether you think The Acolyte was a good show, it’s unlikely that this de-canonization petition will succeed, just like the “Renew The Acolyte” petition.
