Jenna Ortega Pinpoints the Real Problem with Female Representation in Today's Media

You know that Wednesday is one of the hottest television shows right now, and it is that series that helped launch a young actress’ career into orbit. Today, Jenna Ortega is, without a doubt, one of the most popular and influential actresses in Hollywood. Thanks to the acclaimed yet quirky interpretation of Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s hit series, Ortega is now a young voice with a lot of influence.

While some people are worried that Jenna Ortega is being typecast, as her recent roles have been very similar, she is pursuing her own path and pushing the boundaries of what she can do, and it seems that it is working for her.

Ortega is currently promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s classic dark fantasy movie, and as part of the promotional tour, she and Catherine O’Hara a talk with MTV’s Josh Horowitz about the movie, and we’ve decided to report on that interview.

The discussion included several interesting moments, most of which are related to the upcoming movie, but while discussing the film, Ortega also managed to send an important message to Hollywood about what proper female representation is, and here is what she said about the issue:

JH: There are certain movies that should get a sequel and shouldn’t get a sequel. And Tim’s been very articulate about this. He was open to this for years if you got the story right, and it happened in the right time, as you said. But where are we at in other things? Edward Scissorhands, for instance, he said, just leave it alone. Do we feel like that? If he called you up tomorrow and said, you know what? Edith Scissorhands is calling to me. What would you say?

JO: No. You know what I would say about that specifically as well? I love that there’s a lot more female leads nowadays. I think that’s so special. But we should have our own. I don’t like it when it’s like a spin off. Oh, yeah. Then they’ll be… And then she does the main– I don’t want to seem like Jamie Bond. I want to see… just another bad ass. So… yeah, something like that. Definitely. Definitely leave it. And also the beauty of something like Edward is the mystery. I think it’s very sensitive.

We can only agree with this. It’s not that a female James Bond wouldn’t be badass, it’s that women are – with such a practice – degraded as being unable to be great standalone characters; in fact, from that standpoint, it seems that a woman can only be a copy of a male character, and not even a good one, since most such movies flopped.

This is why we agree with Ortega! We want more characters like Wednesday and Furiosa, strong and awesome female characters that we will love!
