Pacific Rim hit theaters back in 2013. It grossed $101.8 million domestically and $309.2 million internationally for a global gross of $411 million. The film was directed by Guillermo del Toro and saw various countries across the globe create giant robots called Jaegers in order to combat the threat of an invading alien force that was sending giant Kaiju through a dimensional portal to conquer Earth.

The film starred Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket as he teamed up with Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori under the leadership of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost. Alongside Max Martini’s Herc Hansen and Robert Kazinsky’s Chuck Hanson they pilot Gipsy Danger and the Striker Eureka Jaegers against various Kaijus before they launch an offensive attack on the dimensional portal with a nuclear weapon.

The first film found a cult following among giant robot and kaiju fans and spawned a sequel with Pacific Rim: Uprising that debuted in 2018. However, the film fared far worse than the original at the box office. It only grossed $59.8 million domestically and $231 million internationally for a global total of $290.9 million.

The film was directed by Steven S. DeKnight and starred John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, Scott Eastwood as Nate Lambert, and Cailee Spaeny as Amara Namani.

Most recently the franchise found a home on Netflix with the animated series Pacific Rim: The Black. It aired for two seasons in 2021 and 2022.

It’ll be interesting to see where this show will find a home. The original two films were distributed by Peacock owner Universal Pictures. Obviously, the animated show was broadcast on Netflix.

Legendary aired its Godzilla spin-off series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+. The company’s Dune: Prophecy spin-off series will premiere in HBO this November.
