Hollywood is no stranger to adapting some of the literary world’s most celebrated and unforgettable tales, from enduring classics like Romeo and Juliet and Pride and Prejudice to more modern-day iterations such as Reacher, The Notebook, and the spellbinding Harry Potter series. If there’s one thing that audiences can’t get enough of, it’s a riveting crime drama with juicy twists and turns, and Netflix has made the gripping genre its bread and butter and has created some truly dazzling original shows.
The streaming juggernaut’s latest success is The Lincoln Lawyer, which famously follows Los Angeles-based defense attorney Mickey Haller as he runs his practice out of the comfort of his Lincoln Town Car, driving around sunny California helping out his clients while trying to make a positive difference and assist those in need. The knockout series just released its highly-anticipated third season on October 17, 2024, and is an adaptation of the bestselling Michael Connelly novels.
Though fans have flocked to watch as Haller takes on one complicated case after the next, viewers may not realize that the resolute lawyer has a surprising connection to another small screen stand-out, one who is just as complex and captivating as Mickey Haller himself. Let’s dive in and check out what other TV adaptation The Lincoln Lawyer and Haller is interestingly related to.
The Lincoln Lawyer Becomes Netflix’s Latest Sensation
Based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling book series, Netflix’s gripping legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer features Manuel García-Rulfo as savvy criminal defense lawyer Mickey Haller as he notably conducts his practice out of his Lincoln Town Car, taking on colorful cases and clients in sunny Los Angeles. A recovering addict with an idealistic attitude and compassionate heart, Haller goes to painstaking lengths to help those who seek out his services, doing so with the help of his close pal and number one investigator Dennis “Cisco” Wojciechowski (Angus Sampson) and his legal aide ex-wife Lorna Crane (Becki Newton).
The Lincoln Lawyer made its dazzling debut on May 13, 2022, and audiences everywhere couldn’t get enough of the tenacious and optimistic attorney as he is chauffeured around the City of Angels by an old client and former addict, Izzy Letts (Jazz Raycole), assisting those in need as he tries to make a positive difference in the community. The streaming knockout is currently in its third season, and the drama’s first installment amassed over 108 million viewing hours in just its first week of release, becoming Netflix’s platform’s most-watched English-language series globally.
The freshman season of the literary adaptation achieved a solid 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, while its follow-up fared even better and nabbed a stellar 91%, becoming both a critical and streaming triumph. Viewers were blown away by its root-worthy lead protagonist, Haller, and his captivating associates and adversaries, and enjoyed how the Connelly book series was able to be better fleshed out in the Netflix adaptation while taking its time exploring the universe and characters. The third season of The Lincoln Lawyer is currently underway and appears to be back and better than ever, as it now holds a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score upon its October 17 release.
Mickey Haller’s Surprise Connection to Harry Bosch
Though fans have grown to know and love Mickey Haller thanks to the massive popularity of The Lincoln Lawyer, some may not realize that the determined defense attorney has an interesting connection to another popular TV character: Harry Bosch. Not only did Michael Connelly pen the novels centered on Haller’s many cases and adventures, the successful author also introduced fans to the tough and strong-willed LAPD detective in the electrifying Bosch book series, which was brilliantly adapted for the small screen in 2015 with Prime’s mega-hit show Bosch and its spin-off Bosch: Legacy.
Titus Welliver served up a dominating performance as the resilient detective with a strong moral compass and unflappable attitude, and the famous lawman just-so-happens to be the half-brother of the endearing L.A. lawyer Haller. The siblings share the same universe and are related through their father, Mickey Haller Sr., a distinguished defense attorney who first gained prominence when he represented notorious mobster Mickey Cohen in the bestselling novels.
Haller is substantially younger than his detective half-brother Bosch, as he was just five years old when his elder sibling first met their father when he was an adult, doing so shortly before Haller Sr. passed away. The two distinct characters end up interacting and having their stories cross over throughout the exciting books, with the two officially meeting for the first time in the second Mickey Haller novel, The Brass Verdict. In the book, Bosch is tasked with investigating the murder of the lawyer Haller inherits the firm from, with the two learning to navigate their complex relationship after only connecting as adults.
Only time will tell whether or not Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch will ever engage with each other on the small screen, as it would be very interesting to see Manuel García-Rulfo and Titus Welliver banter as their respective counterparts and highlight their characters’ long and complicated history. The Lincoln Lawyer just premiered its latest exciting season, and Bosch: Legacy is set to conclude its run on Freevee with its third and final installment in 2025, so there is still an opportunity for worlds to collide and Haller and Bosch to meet face-to-face in their shared universe. Stream The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix.
