It’s dangerous to love Netflix’s products these days, because they are either canceled or plunged into uncertainty.
Unless you’re Wednesday, it’s pretty hard to get immediately renewed for new seasons on Netflix, and this is why many fans are getting anxious to even start watching new series — purely because they may get canceled after a long wait for any news.
This happens even to projects that are praised and anticipated to be renewed; with Guillermo del Toro ‘s recent horror anthology, it’s pretty much the same. Dubbed “a near-perfect horror fantasy” by almost everyone, it is still in limbo, with Netflix yet to renew or cancel it.
It’s Cabinet of Curiosities we’re talking about — a daring endeavour by del Toro, who assembled acclaimed horror directors to tell several sinister stories, starting and finishing by the stories co-written by himself. The first season had eight episodes, and among the directors involved were Guillermo Navarro, Vincenzo Natali, David Prior, Ana Lily Amirpour, Keith Thomas, Catherine Hardwicke, Panos Cosmatos, and Jennifer Kent.
What Do Fans Think of Cabinet of Curiosities?
Even though the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes could be better (only 72%; still fresh though!), critics were almost unanimous in praising Cabinet of Curiosities, leaving the anthology with a whopping 93% on Tomatometer.
On Reddit, people are rooting for a second season for Cabinet of Curiosities, even if they didn’t necessarily love all the episodes from the first season. Many people believe that there should be more short horror with good budget.
Some fans were not okay with the way episode 6, Dreams in the Witch House, “butchered” the works of H.P. Lovecraft, but others seem to be perfectly fine with an unexpected take.
“I loved it and I hope they do another season. The Outside was 100% my favorite, but I enjoyed all of them. I really like how Dreams in the Witch House showed how goofy some of Lovecraft’s works could be. That smarmy little human faced rat is just like I imagined,” Redditor PeculiarPangolinMan said.
Will There Be a Season 2 After All?
Currently, Cabinet of Curiosities remains in limbo, but fans don’t lose hope. In fact, they are already suggesting new directors for a second season, fantasizing about big names like Ari Aster, M. Night Shyamalan, or Mike Flanagan joining the horror party.
Del Toro himself already has a list of directors he’d wanted to work with on a second season. Among them are Jayro Bustamente (La Llorona), Isaa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid), and Larry Fessenden (Killers of a Flower Moon).
Now, it’s up to Netflix to make sure this dream happens (or not). So far, you can binge all eight episodes of Cabinet of Curiosities on the platform.
