Originally announced in April 2023, the New Jedi Order signifies Star Wars’ return to theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
An untitled Star Wars film is set for release on May 22, 2026, a date Lucasfilm had not officially confirmed until earlier this year when they revealed The Mandalorian and Grogu, a sequel to the hit Disney+ series, with filming scheduled to begin soon.
However, recent reports tell a different story: the movie is not only far from starting production, but it is currently on hold due to undisclosed development issues.
These rumors come from Daniel Richtman, a reliable industry insider and leaker known for his solid track record. He shared this information on his paid Patreon account, although specific details were not disclosed. As it stands, the movie is not expected to begin production until 2025.

This isn’t the first report that casts the New Jedi Order in a negative light. A few months ago, Bespin Bulletin published a similar article expressing concerns about the film. It claimed that filming would not begin this year, with reasons ranging from the WGA strike to script issues.
There’s speculation that Lucasfilm might look for a new writer for the project, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Steven Knight is stepping away. They may be seeking additional help to assist him with the script or to refine it. Knight is expected to remain involved as the project moves forward.
Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the film follows Rey’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order. Originally, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were slated to write it, but Steven Knight has since taken over. The story takes place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, exploring a galaxy in turmoil following the war and the fall of the First Order. Kathleen Kennedy noted that Rey is trying to fulfill her promise to Luke by rebuilding the Jedi Order using ancient texts.
Recently, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy mentioned that she is already facing criticism for the movie, but she plans to ignore the negative feedback until she completes it.
