Norman Reedus Reveals Original Plan For Daryl & Carol’s Walking Dead Reunion & Explains Why It Was Rewritten

Near the start of Daryl Dixon season 2, episode 4, a young guard releases Daryl from imprisonment, wherein he uses a knife and mace to fight attacking fast zombies and members of the Pouvoir. Once the action settles, however, he sees Carol at the other end of the hallway. The two embrace, having finally found each other after so long.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Reedus revealed how the original plan for Daryl Dixon to unite Daryl and Carol was for him to still be imprisoned when she found him. However, the actor wanted the two to be on equal ground when they found each other, while also having it feel surreal that they were finally reunited. He described the reunion as “frenetic,” with an action-packed sequence being the most fitting way for the pair to find each other once more. Check out what Reedus had to say below:

It was written originally different where she finds me in jail. And we talked about changing it.

I wanted the emotion to be different. Not just, ‘Oh, she finds me and I’m weak.’ I wanted it to start weak, and then he gets out and turns into a killing machine — and then just a record-scratch moment where it goes quiet. Everything goes on around us, but the sound goes off and it’s like… ‘Is this real? You’re right in front of me.’ So we worked on that.

It had to be different than you just found me. The energy had to be out of this world when it happened. It had to be frenetic — just pure adrenaline.

What Reedus’ Statement Says About Daryl & Carol’s Reunion

This Was The Best Way For Them To Find Each Other

Following Daryl and Carol’s reunion, the pair become the central characters in Daryl Dixon, with Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) dying the scene after they’re back together. Much like their first scene together in the spinoff, the pair feel on equal ground throughout the remainder of the episode. This reflects how they were both standing in the hallway amid their own carnage when they saw each other, being on equal footing right from the start. This continues all the way through to the end, where they work together to kill Genet (Anne Charrier), leader of the Pouvoir.

Finding one another in the middle of the violent attack on the Nest is also emblematic of their own survival abilities, something on full display while fighting groups of people in episodes 3 and 4. Since their reunion sets the stage for Daryl Dixon season 3, having them on equal footing while meeting within a major fight symbolizes the necessity to portray neither as weaker than the other. It also emphasizes thei agency, signifying the dual importance they’ll have while trying to save Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) from the newly-formed alliance of the Pouvoir and the Nest.

The sudden nature of Daryl and Carol’s reunion following a major action scene managed to achieve the “record scratch” feeling Reedus was hoping for. The moment was almost surreal, as the pair’s reunion allowed them to find each other on equal ground, making it all the more powerful when they were together. With two episodes left before Daryl Dixon season 2 ends, it seems they’ll remain on similar ground for the rest of the upcoming episodes.
