“One Of The Scariest Things”: Ryan Reynolds Addresses Hugh Jackman’s Long Tirade In The Deadpool & Wolverine Honda Odyssey Scene And How Worried He Was About It

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine berates Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson in Deadpool & WolverineX-Men and MCU star Ryan Reynolds recalls how scary it was to film the Deadpool & Wolverine scene where Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine tears down Wade Wilson. In Deadpool & Wolverine, Wolverine barely tolerates Deadpool’s overzealous personality and sense of humor, holding his anger back until Deadpool reveals that he isn’t sure they can save Wolverine’s universe and Deadpool’s timeline “Earth-10005”. Wolverine’s reaction is one of the highlights not only of Deadpool & Wolverine, but also of Hugh Jackman’s entire Wolverine career, as Wolverine leaves Deadpool speechless with his deeply personal insults.

During Ryan Reynolds’ conversation with Andrew Garfield in an episode of Variety‘s “Actors on Actors”, Reynolds confesses he was worried about Wolverine’s MCU introduction, particularly in regard to the mutant’s dialog. Reynolds argues that Wolverine’s verbal fight with Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine was especially daunting, as “he’s saying more in that one monologue than he says in an entire movie typically”. Watch Ryan Reynolds’ conversation with Andrew Garfield below:

Wolverine is the one I was really worried about in the movie. Yeah, because right away, people are bringing Hugh [Jackman] back in this iconic role, and writing Wolverine dialogue was one of the scariest things I’ve done. Also, there’s a scene you may remember in the van where he just tears me apart. […] But it’s a gamble because he’s saying more in that one monologue than he says in an entire movie typically, so Shawn [Levy] and I were very worried about that.

Ryan Reynolds says Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine was an intimidating task, and for good reason. Hugh Jackman had played Wolverine in nine movies before entering the MCU, and he was already a superhero movie icon before his first MCU role. Not only did Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy have to do Wolverine justice, but they also had to justify the introduction of a new Wolverine variant after the original Wolverine’s death in James Mangold’s Logan, which is still widely regarded as the hero’s perfect farewell.

Reynolds and Levy achieved their goal with Deadpool & Wolverine‘s comic-accurate take on Wolverine, but Wolverine’s anger-fueled speech inside Nicepool’s Honda Odyssey stands out as the most dramatic scene of the movie. Wolverine’s dialog is filled with painful truths about Deadpool, and Hugh Jackman delivers it with all the pent-up frustration and hatred that it requires. The fact that Deadpool stays quiet and looks visibly hurt is proof that Wolverine’s speech struck a note.
