The suspense is nerve-racking, and the excitement is already through the roof as the theories about Pope and Sarah’s fight to survive, JJ’s shocking discovery and the rest of the Pogue-and-Kook-chaos circulate online. John B, JJ, Pope, Kiara, Sarah, Cleo, and even Rafe and Topper somehow are always far away from peace and quiet. Yes, everyone loves the chaotic ensemble that is the Outer Banks characters, but Season 4 just introduced one specific character who shakes everything up on Kildare Island. Negatively, that is.
Who Is Ruthie from Outer Banks?
Fans of the show were first introduced to Ruthie, who is portrayed by Mia Challis, in Season 4 of Outer Banks. There isn’t much information about her past other than the fact that she is a full-on Kook who undoubtedly enjoys a wealthy lifestyle. Due to her Kook upbringing, she also has a spoiled, even bratty side to her, and while everyone has at least some positive traits, hers have yet to be revealed.
Ruthie takes on a rather dominant position among the Kooks and, in particular, is close to Topper. Topper might finally find a new love interest in Ruthie, but the intention behind it is questionable. Seeing how she has turned from an annoying side character to someone who evokes pure hatred among fans, it is difficult to imagine her in a caring relationship. Then again, it’s Topper who is borderline obsessed with his love interest and prone to being used because of his position.
Ruthie Has Some Major Red Flags
Yes, red flags are pretty much a staple on the hit Netflix show, but come on, Ruthie is like the Mount Everest of them all. Murderer, master manipulator, sweet talker; the main characters in Outer Banks offer a long list of red flags, which are simply hard to ignore, and Ward and Rafe Cameron (shocker) are undoubtedly prime examples of who you shouldn’t trust. But then there’s Ruthie, and, oh boy, she fits right in. No, she hasn’t murdered a person, yet. However, she did turn practically the entirety of Outer Banks fans against her when she carelessly got into a truck and sped towards the Pogues on the beach, almost hitting them and, in the process, killing a baby turtle that had just hatched. Cruel. This was just cruel.
As if her cold-blooded behavior wasn’t enough, Ruthie, throughout her entire screen time, showcased some classic bully behavior, and it’s so uncalled-for. In general, her dominating personality is pretty intimidating to the point where it’s even uncomfortable. It’s one thing to be confident, but Ruthie is straight-up brash and thinks she is the hotshot of the century. She willingly talks badly about people, even her friends, in front of others and finds evil joy in exposing them.
At one point, Ruthie pointed out how Topper needed to stand up for himself and mentioned that the Pogues kept on using him because he simply let them take advantage of him. When Topper, clearly upset by her calling him out like that, states that he promised the Pogues a truce, Ruthie proceeds to push him. By exploiting the fact that he wants to fit in and remain in his high position among the Kooks, Ruthie manages to convince him. After that, well, everything went downhill, and an innocent turtle fell victim to Ruthie’s mindless behavior.
What Will Happen to Outer Banks’ Ruthie?
There is no doubt that Ruthie will continue to stir up drama in the second part of Outer Banks Season 4. The only question is to what lengths she will go and who she will drag along. Topper and Ruthie seem to be connected in some way, and it might be in a romantic one. As mentioned, Outer Banks’ Topper might finally find love, but it certainly wouldn’t be good for him.
After all, Ruthie just popped up out of nowhere, and it feels as though she has one specific goal: becoming the new Kook Princess. A theory could be that she had always been jealous of Sarah and had a crush on Topper before, which could have led to her stepping up and trying to portray herself as the new princess in Figure 8, adding fuel to the ever-present fire between Pogues and Kooks. Ruthie clearly is trying to be an alpha in her friend group, pushing everyone below herself by being a bully. At the same time, Topper continues his completely oblivious strut, following along with whatever can help him prevail. While it used to be his love for Sarah that drove him, it is now the pain of betrayal and maybe still some feelings that might send him on Ruthie’s road of destruction. One way or another, both Ruthie and Topper will certainly be involved in some drama together.
Apart from the twisted relationship between Ruthie and Topper, which brings up some question marks regarding its seriousness, one thing will surely blow up: the Ruthie and Kiara bomb. After the shocking Outer Banks mid-season twist, Kiara already has a lot to deal with, which could cause her fuse to be shorter than usual. Whether they get into another heated argument or find themselves in a Kook vs. Pogue fistfight, these two will stand opposite each other again in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 2. And it won’t be as besties. It is safe to say that Ruthie has the potential to become an even more reckless, cruel, and unhinged villain.
Outer Banks and chaos go hand in hand, and fans are already sitting on needles, waiting to see what Season 4 Part 2 of the Netflix series will have to offer, but even if everyone loves a little chaotic nudge, there is only so much one can take from Ruthie. Let’s just hope she stays as a side character with little screen time or that the writers find a perfect way to get rid of the most annoying character in Outer Banks. Outer Banks is available to stream on Netflix.
