When James Gunn took over DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, many fans hoped Henry Cavill would continue as the Man of Steel in the newly rebooted DCU.
However, that wasn’t the case. Cavill soon announced that he would not be returning to the role. By then, Gunn had already mapped out plans for a new Superman movie—one that wouldn’t be an origin story but would focus on a younger version of the hero, making Cavill an unlikely fit.
The debate over whether Gunn is responsible for Cavill’s departure continues among fans. Meanwhile, David Corenswet has been cast as the new cinematic Superman. But before he landed the role, numerous actors auditioned for the part, including Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger was asked about his superhero auditions by Joshua Horowitz, and he revealed that he has only auditioned for a few over the years. He tried out for the role of Homelander in The Boys and later landed the role of Golden Boy in Gen V, The Boys spinoff. Finally, Schwarzenegger shared that he also auditioned for James Gunn’s Superman.
He was asked whether he got into the costume and the actor admitted that he didn’t:
No, no. I don’t think I got any feedback. I think it was like “no, not for you.” And then it was fine, then I got White Lotus one right after it.
Schwarzenegger also explained that the audition was self-tape.
Jack Quaid who portrays Hughie in ‘The Boys’ revealed several months ago that he also sent in a tape but got a similar reaction as Schwarzenegger:
I did, yeah. I think everybody did, if you kind of fit the bill. I didn’t get very far at all. I put myself on tape and it went nowhere and that’s totally fine, like that’s totally cool.
But we do know at least one actor who actually did progress through an audition and also got to wear the suit at one point – which he ripped – Tom Brittney:
It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman suit. It was an actual suit. I don’t know how much I’ve signed away. It was an insane process. I’ve met James Gunn before because I screen-tested for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’
