If you like your war games with an edge of horror, there’s a new game coming out that could scratch that itch.

War games like Battlefield and Gears of War have dipped their toes into horror in the past, but it’s not like they’re going full Resident Evil (yet).

As William Sherman once said, “War is Hell”, so a fusion of survival horror and war seems like a perfect match for a video game.

Trench Tales is an upcoming third-person shooter that’s set in an alternative history WW1, where undead soldiers dominate the trenches.

“Immerse yourself in Trench Tales‘ mind-bending narrative, a haunting journey through a rich, dark tapestry of mystery and suspense,” reads the description over on the Steam store.

“As you delve into the depths of this war-torn world, confront malevolent forces, and unearth long-buried secrets, the story twists and turns, challenging your perceptions and blurring the lines between reality and illusion.”

Using your weapons and superhuman abilities, you must fight to escape these otherworldly forces using any means necessary. These powers include the ability to slow time, see through walls, and unleash a burst of energy to defeat your enemies.

As for the types of bad dudes we’ll see in Trench Tales, developer Talking Drums has been a little secretive about showing them off, which makes sense. But it has revealed that “undead soldiers and powerful warlords” will be taking the form of the game’s antagonists.

Trench Tales will also apparently have deep weapon customisation, similar to Call of Duty’s Gunsmith feature, where you can tweak your guns to fit the playstyle you’re using.

For example, you can fit a silencer on that bad boy for a more stealthy approach, or tweaking it for accuracy if you want to shoot from afar. It’s all a part of Trench Tales’ tactical combat that makes it look like an interesting horror shooter.

Trench Tales doesn’t have a release date yet, but you can sign up for the closed beta test and follow the developer’s progress.
