Charles Edwards as Celembrimbor and the One RingCelebrimbor actor Charles Edwards has unpacked the prophecy his character makes about Sauron’s One Ring during The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 finale. Despite finally breaking free of Sauron’s bewitchment and sending the nine rings of Men away with Galadriel, Celebrimbor finds himself being brutally tortured for knowledge of their whereabouts. In his final moments, Edwards’ Elven smith taunts his captor with a vision that the Rings of Power will ultimately lead to Sauron’s own destruction. It is these fateful words that prompt the aspiring Dark Lord to take Celembrimbor’s life with a final arrow through the heart.

Speaking with Vulture following the recent Rings of Power season 2 finale, Edwards was asked about the true nature of his prophetic words. Likening his character’s own vision to the one experienced by Galadriel at the beginning of season 2, Edwards also suggests that Celebrimbor’s experience in crafting the rings may have also led to him deducing Sauron’s need to craft a master ring. Check out his comments below:

I was thinking it was similar to the vision Galadriel has of Celebrimbor at the beginning of season two. It’s a flash. There could be an idea of enslavement with the rings as well. Now that he’s gotten far enough with the process, he understands that Sauron’s going to need control to make these rings work. Maybe he’s pieced that together as well. But I saw it as a kind of flash, a vision in my head, and he just says it.

While The Rings of Power season 1 only saw the first three Elven rings forged in Eregion, the events of season 2 quickly made up for lost time and depicted the forging of both the seven Dwarven rings and the nine rings of Men. With only Sauron’s One Ring now left to be made, it would seem that Amazon’s show is rapidly moving toward the cataclysmic events that result in Sauron’s original defeat and the end of the Second Age of Middle-earth.

As such, Sauron’s continued journey with the reclaimed nine rings may be tinged with a newfound sense of hesitation and caution

However, Celebrimbor’s final prophecy, and strange emotional effect they had on Charlie Vickers’ Sauron, may hint that Morgoth’s former servant could potentially begin second-guessing his plans. Seemingly obsessed by the need for order and control, Celebrimbor’s words appeared to shock Sauron to the point of him succumbing to his own emotions, and even brought Tolkien’s ultimate villain to the point of tears.

As such, Sauron’s continued journey with the reclaimed nine rings may be tinged with a newfound sense of hesitation and caution. Moreover, his decision to eventually craft the One Ring may even come as a final act of desperation to regain greater control over the other rings, rather than the carefully plotted endgame most viewers have already assumed it to be.

Celebrimbor’s final words have already hinted that the Rings of Power possess a fate very different to that envisioned by their master, something that those already familiar with Tolkien’s original tales know all too well. However, the question remains whether the Elf’s prophetic words will have any lasting impact on Sauron, or affect the way in which he handles the nine rings as he seeks to disperse them among the Kings of Men. While viewers already know that Sauron’s faith in his creations will lead to his final destruction, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 may even show Sauron beginning to fear that which he has already wrought.
