As many fans have been waiting for, Deadpool & Wolverine, which stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, is finally out, and people absolutely love it. Many have been expecting a long time to see these two iconic characters together, and now they are on screen. Finally.
The movie showed us a variety of things and how many possibilities there are for films and characters in the MCU, but it also has a lot of future implications, especially in terms of how the character of Deadpool is perceived and how his role in the story will evolve going forward.
Namely, and that is something that most people missed, Deadpool & Wolverine actually broke Ryan Reynolds’ golden rule related to Deadpool the narrator, and that seems to open some interesting possibilities in the form of a team-up with another MCU character that likes to, consistently, break the fourth wall.
Before we continue, we’d like to remind you what the golden rule is. Namely, Ryan Reynolds explained earlier that Deadpool can be the only character to break the fourth wall in a movie, as he is the only one with the privilege of being an unreliable narrator in the story. He explained it like this:
There are rules. Very specific rules. You would diminish stakes in the film if everyone – or even anyone else – was also aware of the fourth wall or any kind of meta aspect. Deadpool is the only character who has that ability to do that. If everyone did that, then you would no longer invest in that character as much. You really want to believe that the villain is a villain. You really want to believe that your costar’s character is true as well. Deadpool can undermine that – and does undermine that – because you don’t want the audience to take him as seriously… I always feel like an absolute dick when I’m trying to explain: I need people as invested as humanly possible in every other character while knowing that only Deadpool is the unreliable narrator.
But, this rule was effectively broken in Deadpool & Wolverine, as Nicepool also broke the fourth wall, thereby becoming the second unreliable narrator in the same movie. This, of course, opens up numerous possibilities, especially in light of some earlier comments made by Reynolds.
If you remember, we’ve already talked about there being a link between She-Hulk and Deadpool, although in a negative way, but the two characters are connected in more ways than one. Namely, both are known for breaking the fourth wall! And, in fact, She-Hulk did it first: She-Hulk first broke the fourth wall in 1989’s Sensational She-Hulk #1, while Deadpool didn’t do it until 1997’s Deadpool #11.
In light of that fact and the fact that Reynolds broke his own rule in Deadpool & Wolverine, we think that a team-up between the two of them is now more than possible, even though Reynolds said that it would be difficult exactly because of that aspect. But now that it’s taken care of… Perhaps?
