Sigourney Weaver in Avatar, edited over Din Djarin and Grogu in a poster for The Mandalorian season 2After previous rumors and speculation, Sigourney Weaver has officially confirmed that she will be appearing in The Mandalorian & Grogu, marking her long-awaited debut in the Star Wars franchise. Details about The Mandalorian & Grogu are still quite sparse, even if new movie footage shown at D23: The Ultimate Disney Event provided audiences with a few new crumbs to go off of. This includes its cast list, which, aside from star Pedro Pascal and Steve Blum (Zeb Orrelios), is practically nonexistent. Now, however, a sci-fi legend has become the next name to join this duo.

Weaver has revealed to Deadline that she’s currently working on The Mandalorian & Grogu. Weaver even “got to meet Grogu for the first time the other day,” which is no doubt a highlight for any actor who’s new to The Mandalorian franchise. The actor doesn’t provide any specific details about her role, but at this stage, she doesn’t need to. Even just knowing someone of her caliber is a part of this upcoming Star Wars movie is an absolute thrill.

I’m playing a role in The Mandalorian & Grogu [which will be directed by Jon Favreau]. I got to meet Grogu for the first time the other day. I’m filming that before I go to London for The Tempest at the end of the year.

Given how few details are out there about The Mandalorian & Grogu, this is an incredibly exciting update, particularly because of how talented and renowned Weaver is as an actor. From Aliens to AvatarWeaver has time and time again proven why she’s considered a legend in the sci-fi genre. It’s almost a wonder that she hasn’t yet been a part of Star Wars before this point, and she certainly fits in perfectly with the franchise. Including her in the next Star Wars movie is an important, and an exciting, choice.

Star Wars has a lot to prove with The Mandalorian & Grogu, given the fact they haven’t released a movie since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and they have infamously scrapped quite a few movie projects that they had in the works. Ironically, however, it was the success of The Mandalorian that convinced them to focus on TV, and now it will be The Mandalorian that takes the franchise back to the movie theater once again. Weaver will no doubt play a large role in helping this to truly work.

While Weaver’s name is certainly a big draw for The Mandalorian & Groguit’s her acting caliber that’s the most thrilling part of this news. Whether she plays a helpful hero, a sinister villain, or someone in between, Weaver’s performance will no doubt elevate Star Wars’ next movie to brand-new heights. Her casting alone thus points towards Star Wars is aiming high with The Mandalorian & Grogu, and if its big screen debut is anything like its TV debut, then it will certainly deliver.
