Game of Thrones established itself as one of the most successful fantasy drama TV series with its epic world-building. The show had a high-stakes narrative, political drama, captivating characters, and a dash of supernatural creatures. However, not everything from the TV series was made-up or unrealistic.

George R. R. Martin accepted on several occasions that he drew inspiration from other writers and real-world scenarios for A Song of Ice and Fire. Fans and history buffs soon noticed that the fictional struggle for ascension resembled the events of the Wars of the Roses. Now Sophie Turner and Kit Harington are reuniting for a film project which shares this special connection with GOT.

George R. R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire became a worldwide sensation when it was adapted into a TV series by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Fans were enthralled by the elaborate fictional world and its mysterious and captivating characters.

But many started noticing some similarities between the imaginary world of Westeros and real-life people from the past. Historian Dan Jones also claimed that several characters from the popular show were based on real-life figures from the Wars of the Roses.

The author himself stated the same, confessing on multiple occasions that he was inspired by the art and history around him. During his 2014 interview with Channel 4 News, R. R. Martin revealed the primary source of his inspiration.

Well, British history has played enormous impact on Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire. I mean the Wars of the Roses are probably the single biggest influence…

The overall plot of power struggle between several families resembled the actual war fought between the houses of Lancaster and York between 1455 to 1487. On a closer look similarities can be drawn between the House of Lancaster and the fictional House Lannister.

Both the real war and the war in the series featured a Mad King, a Boy King, and a Hand of the King. Similarly, the Duke of York could be the inspiration behind Ned Stark’s character (played by Sean Bean), both figures considered to be loyal advisors to their lords.
