The Star Wars galaxy is a mysterious place full of mysterious creatures, my personal favourite being the Starweirds, creatures that apparently infiltrate ships in hyperspace and steal the passengers.
There are a few other “Yodas” in the Star Wars series but none have brought us any closer to learning the species’ origins, and the introduction of Grogu in The Mandalorian just raises even more questions.
With no answers, fans are simply making them up themselves as a Reddit thread asked the community if you had to name what kind of creature Yoda was, what would it be?
There were some good answers here too, the best one in my opinion being “their species was originally called ‘Jedi’, like the Sith used to be a species.” This would make a lot of sense given how strong in the force Yoda, Grogu and others like them are, so they must have a deeper connection to the mysterious power than we’re led to believe.
Another good answer was “the Whills. It would be a nice reference to the very early drafts where Star Wars was called ‘Journal of the Whills.’
Though some fans believe it’s the lack of a name that makes Yoda’s species so cool, and that it’d be a shame to put a label on them.
Personally, I hope we never get a concrete answer on what Yoda is, I think he’s a much better character when he’s just a small, green mysterious being.
