'Star Wars' Finally Explains How Kylo Ren Got Hold of Darth Vader's Mask

Adam Driver is an actor who has appeared in numerous roles in many movies, which include Lincoln (2012), Frances Ha (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Marriage Story (2019), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), and Ferrari (2023), but one role stands out among mainstream fans, which is what of Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, from the Star Wars franchise.

And while the Sequel Trilogy was more clumsy than perfect, even ridiculous at times, Driver’s performance has been praised and Kylo Ren is still considered as one of the trilogy’s most important characters. This explains why Kylo Ren is still a topic of discussion and why everyone keeps returning to the character.

In the movies, Kylo’s relationship with the deceased Darth Vader was a major aspect of his character, and it is a story whose background was left – for the most part – unexplored in the movies, but a recent Star Wars story finally dug deeper into the origins of this relationship, as you will see soon.

Long story short, we know that Kylo Ren had a fascination with Darth Vader and that he wanted to elevate his grandfather. Of course, this is a more complex story about Kylo’s transition to the Dark Side of the Force, but we know that Vader was an idol for Kylo, and Kylo would often discuss his plans with Vader’s destroyed mask. And this is where things get a bit confusing.

Okay, we know that Vader removed his mask at the end of The Return of the Jedi and that the mask ended up somewhere, but the movies didn’t really explore that part, possibly because it seemed a bit irrelevant at the time, as Lucas had different plans for the Sequel Trilogy than Disney.

But Disney decided to go back to Vader, and now the issue of the mask is once again an important one, with the following question arising – how did Kylo Ren get Vader’s old Mask?

Well, the movies did not explain this, but a recently released comic book – Star Wars: Battle of Jakku- Insurgency Rising #1 – reveals, to a degree, how it happened. Namely, after Vader’s downfall, Luke reveals the truth to Leia, and she gets quite angry at her father, which is understandable, and needs time to process it.

She, at one point, finds the charred mask picks it up after some hesitation, and then talks to the only thing she has of her father, saying, among other things: “All I feel is anger – over all the things you did. The people you hurt. (…) The people you left behind. I’m going to set that aside for now.

She then throws the mask away, and it is later found by an unknown person, most likely a scavenger, which is how it ends up in Kylo Ren’s possession. Yes, we know, it’s not a proper explanation, but it is more than we had before this comic, so we’ll take it regardless.
