The Prequel Trilogy, although not as loved when it originally came out, gave us a lot more of what we wanted to see since the Original Trilogy – the Jedi. Set in the Old Republic era, the Prequel Trilogy provided us with more Jedi action, more Sith action, and more brilliant characters.
Among them is Mace Windu, who was played by Samuel L. Jackson in the Prequel Trilogy films, and who was – at the time – known as the second-most powerful Jedi in the universe, behind only Master Yoda. Windu was an expert in lightsaber combat, and he quickly became one of the most popular Star Wars characters of all time.
But, as everyone knows, Windu seemingly met his end at the hands of Palpatine after Anakin’s betrayal and has not appeared after. And while the movies did not explicitly confirm his death, most fans believed that he did, in fact, die, although some recent developments and comments might suggest otherwise!
We never really saw Mace Windu die, did we? Losing an arm is nothing in the world of Star Wars, that much we have seen, and while he has been thrown out of a window, we never really saw him fall and die, did we?
Sure, the character hasn’t appeared since and everyone took him for dead – not even the Empire’s officials mentioned him, unlike some other Jedi – but we never really saw him die. Not really.
In light of that, Samuel L. Jackson recently spoke about the future of his character and he said that he would definitely like to return to the franchise, hoping that his character would get a standalone series like Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. In fact, in a talk with Jimmy Fallon, the actor said the following:
“There’s a history alone, history of one-armed, one-handed people in the Star Wars Universe. So, just cause they cut my arm off and I fell out a window, doesn’t mean I’m dead. I’m a Jedi! The second-most powerful Jedi in the universe next to Yoda. So, I can float! Yeah, he’s out there.”

Okay, this doesn’t have to mean anything going forward, but Jackson is pretty much convinced that Windu is alive, and there are old stories (now non-canon) that could give Disney an opportunity to bring the character back; it’s not like anyone would mind, right?
But, what happened to Windu, then? Okay, he survived, but why hasn’t anyone heard about him or of him? Well, a prequel novel titled Star Wars: Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss could actually explain that part.
In the book, there is a passage that reveals the following: “Because Mace, too, has an attachment. Mace has a secret love. Mace Windu loves the Republic.“
While this one could be interpreted in more ways than one, what is important for us here is the following: if Mace survived, he observed the fall of the Republic and the establishment of the Empire.
As someone who loved the Republic deeply, Windu would have been disappointed and crushed by this turn of events, so he probably went into complete hiding, disillusioned and depressed by the destruction of the ideals he held in such high regard. And that would explain why Windu was never heard from again.
