Well, less scenes with Catherine Zeta-Jones is unfortunate, but the news about Buscemi couldn’t be any happier!
Wednesday is completely different from its predecessors, because instead of the traditional story about an eccentric old-money family living in an antebellum mansion and hiding a lot of paranormal secrets, we got a school drama starring goth Jenna Ortega.
But none of this changes the fact that Wednesday turned out to be a great black comedy with enough satire, drama and, of course, the supernatural. After all, the co-executive producer is none other than Tim Burton.
As a result, the show has received rave reviews, high ratings and wins in four Primetime Emmy Award categories. So it’s no surprise that Netflix decided to renew it for a second season, which we learned about in January 2023.
A year later, the series is approaching the active production phase, and with that, more and more details are emerging. For example, we recently received word that the new addition to Season 2 will be the legendary Steve Buscemi. However, his role may contradict a popular fan theory regarding a storyline that could develop the relationship between Wednesday and Morticia Addams.
Steve Buscemi Joins the Wednesday Cast
In April 2024, Variety found out that the new actor who will join the cast of Wednesday Season 2 will be Steve Buscemi. Neither his representatives nor Netflix itself have provided any details to journalists, so any further information at this point is nothing more than mere speculation.
Nevertheless, fans, as well as unnamed Variety ‘sources’, note that the character played by Buscemi will most likely become the new principal of Nevermore Academy.
As you probably know, the previous headmistress of Nevermore, Larissa Weems, played by the gorgeous Gwendoline Christie, was killed while investigating Marilyn Thornhill aka Laurel Gates (Wednesday’s former portrayer, Christina Ricci). And so, the fate of Nevermore Academy was left open.
A Great Theory about Morticia Addams May Not Come True
However, if this rumor is true and Buscemi’s character does become the new head of Nevermore, a remarkable fan theory will unfortunately not become reality. And while it’s not too typical of the Addams Family franchise, the plot would benefit from it, as the new season would focus on the relationship between Wednesday and her mother Morticia, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the series.
The thing is, many believed that Morticia would be the one to take Weems’ place: the two had been students together at Nevermore in the past, and Larissa’s main desire was to create the perfect safe space at the Academy, where students and faculty would not feel like outcasts. And who better to know that than the Addams Family?
However, the news that Buscemi is the new principal is not disappointing at all. Sure, we will lose a lot of Wednesday and Morticia’s scenes together, but that storyline is sure to be revisited many times. In addition, Buscemi’s acting career includes a lot of very diverse roles, many of them blatantly satirical, so we should expect a new and equally bizarre headmaster of Nevermore Academy.
Who Will Be Back in Wednesday Season 2
And while the second season is about to begin filming, other details are still critically scarce. So we can only guess which cast members will return to the series. Except Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, of course!
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
Emma Myers as Enid
Percy Hynes White as Xavier
Joy Sunday as Bianca
Moosa Mostafa as Eugene
Issac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
Fred Armisan as Uncle Fester
George Burcea as Lurch
As we said, filming is scheduled for late April 2024, so we should expect Wednesday Season 2 to be released sometime in 2025.
