In a new interview with TVLine, Superman & Lois boss Todd Helbing reveals some of the other DC foes they had in mind to use for future seasons. Not only did Helbing confirm that they would have fleshed out their Brainiac arc with Milton Fine, but they also had ideas to introduce Darkseid himself in the Superman & Lois continuity, sharing the following:
Todd Helbing: If we went on for a couple more seasons, we would have really explored Brainiac. We would have done more cool, traditional Brainiac stuff with him. There’s also a way to lead up to Darkseid that we had talked about. I don’t know if DC would have given us permission to use Darkseid, but we would have pitched the hell out of it to try to get it. That would have been a lot of fun.
What Superman & Lois Showrunners’ Darkseid & Brainiac Comments Mean For The Show
When it comes to Brainiac in Superman & Lois, he is the one that there was a more natural progression towards in terms of having him be used in a larger capacity after season 4. With the introduction of Milton in the final few episodes, it would have made sense to have centered Brainiac as a potential season 5 antagonist. Brainiac is also a villain who has been proven to work well on television, from Smallville to the short-lived Krypton TV show.
Darkseid, on the other hand, is the more interesting choice based on Helbing’s comments, given that Warner Bros. Discovery has traditionally been very restricted in using him across live-action media. Currentlyx, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is the only full-fledged version of Darkseid that exists in live-action, while Smallville season 10 used a very different iteration of him from the comics. To see what Superman & Lois season 5 or beyond could have done with Darkseid would have been interesting, to say the least.
Our Take On Superman & Lois Showrunners’ Darkseid & Brainiac Comments
While it’s sad that the Superman & Lois season 4 ending is also the end of the series, it’s still great to hear that characters like Brainiac and Darkseid were on the table for consideration by this creative team. This also makes the decision to include Brainiac in the final parts of the show all the more interesting, since it seems there may have been other, grander plans considered for the character, even if they didn’t become reality. But with the series finale having finally aired, the world can always relive every episode of Superman & Lois through Blu-ray/DVD and streaming.
