“That Final Scene!”: Stephen King Shares High Praise For Netflix Thriller

Ali Ahn as Eidra Park in The Diplomat season 2 episodeStephen King shares praise for one of Netflix’s leading thrillers, particularly citing the show’s final scene. Netflix has assembled a few strong political dramas, which varyingly incroporate thrills. The Night Agent, one of Netflix’s biggest series, is a pure action thriller led by Gabriel Basso. It’s been a significant success, with a second installment on the way and a third already confirmed.

The Recruit, which is headlined and executive produced by To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before star Noah Centineo, is more of an action comedy. A few of its episodes are directed by Doug Liman, who is a veteran of the action genre with movies like Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Edge of Tomorrow. But, while largely leaning on Centineo’s likability and charisma as a performer, it also brings the thrills. It is returning for season 2, though a specific release date has not been announced. Another of Netflix’s political dramas recently debuted new episodes, and it’s been getting praise from King and others.

The Show’s Second Installment Is Even Better

King reposted praise for The Diplomat season 2, which debuted new episodes on Netflix on October 31. The original post reads: “S1 of The Diplomat (Netflix) was really good, but S2 is jaw-droppingly fantastic.” The legendary author concurs, adding: “Agreed. That final scene!

Created by The West Wing and Homeland vet Debora Cahn, with four-time Emmy nominee Keri Russell in the lead role of Kate Wyler, the show’s first season consists of eight episodes and introduces Wyler as the new U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Though she’s great in a crisis zone, she’s less at ease with her new post. Her complicated marriage to Hal (Rufus Sewell) also increases that discomfort, and the fact that she’s potentially positioned to take on the role of U.S. Vice President.

With the supporting cast of The Diplomat also including David Gyasi, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essandoh, Agatha All Along’s Ali Ahn, and Better Call Saul’s Michael McKean, the recently-debuted season 2 brings in seven-time Emmy winner and Oscar winner Allison Janney as the Vice President who could be replaced by Kate. Sparks fly, with the second season garnering widespread praise and getting frequently cited as an improvement over season 1.

The Diplomat season 2 has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, with season 1 at 84%

While refraining from spoiling The Diplomat‘s season 2 ending, for anyone who wants to seek the show out, things between Kate and Janney’s character reach an apex in an unexpected way. The tone is a mix between The Night Agent and The Recruit, definitely leaning into a sense of paranoia and conspiracy while maintaining a light touch.

There was some surprise at the series’ comeback being only six episodes, but Cahn, Russell, and the rest of the political thriller’s cast use that shorter range wisely to offer up a fast-paced installment that satisfies and remains breezy. All told, King‘s endorsement is just one indication that The Diplomat season 3 is shaping up quite well.
