God forbid Star Wars try to tell new stories, do new things, and not play in the same overused sandbox that hat man and the dude who never used a writers room, which is why The Mandalorian will probably end with the movie and not get another season so he doesn’t have to play nice with other people and share his little Mando and green space son toys.
Anyway, let’s get into it. The Acolyte has been canceled, which is stupid. Deadline is reporting there will be no Season 2.
It’s not the most terribly surprising news because we live in a Capitalist hellscape where streaming services are living and dying by their highest-watched shows. Heck, Disney+ just became profitable for the first time ever. I miss the days when a show had time to find its audience. It shouldn’t be the norm that something new has only 8 episodes to prove its worth and must be perfect before it faces cancelation—or worse, deletion from the app.
RIP Willow, I literally never got the chance to watch you.
screaming into the void but the idea that any show has to be a #1 hit in order to continue is insane and fosters zero creativity
— Caitlin ✨ (@caitlinplesher) August 19, 2024
my god, i hope they don’t remove acolyte off disney+ for a tax writeoff like they did to willow. we NEED a physical release.
— Braddington (@bradwhipple) August 20, 2024
Because if a show isn’t perfect, it’s gone, and there is little hope for a physical release these days. If you have been following what’s been going on in the streaming world (specifically in the world of animation as The Animation Guild has been screaming about this for years, and oh! Would you look at that? I wrote about this two whole years ago!), the streaming model makes it to where projects can be written off on taxes by freaking billionaires. Why? Because it makes them money, and the lack of physical releases means they don’t have to pay residuals. Again, more on this here where I wrote about it two years ago oh my god this system is broken.
The High Republic fans are understandably upset because god forbid a Star Wars have more than just white men in it. And I say this as a white woman. This era fosters so much creativity, bringing new fans into the franchise who are, frankly, tired of the same Skywalker Saga. One single family can’t run all of the stories in this franchise while everyone else around them suffers and cleans up their drama. If I wanted to watch that, I’d put on Succession. At least that’s won some Emmys. You know what else also won an Emmy? Young Jedi Adventures which is set in the High Republic era, because fans want to see themself in media like this era and The Acolyte. This is such a slap in the face for fans who were seeing themselves for the first time on screen in a galaxy far, far away.
These myopic and shortsighted decisions are killing the industry. In the effort to create only massive blockbuster hits, the studios have created a system that churns out mostly garbage and ignores the diamonds in the rough, all based on obfuscated metrics that mean nothing. https://t.co/etSe1lTWve

Deeply embarrassing that the first Star Wars show to release with an actual writers room (not the hivemind stuff with Jon F. & Mando or small consulting Tony got with Andor) is not given a chance to come back for a second season.
The show found an audience but the audience… https://t.co/ZBKTgeRtHn

The Acolyte was new for live-action. No, it wasn’t a perfect show. It had its share of flaws, but you’re not going to get perfect anything. That’s not where we are now, though. A show has to be House of the Dragons or something to stay on.
I’m a livid site expert at the moment. I see other streaming services like AMC+ of all things embracing its series like Interview with the Vampire to try new things with its queer and diverse stories. Heck, The Mayfair Witches didn’t bring in the same numbers as its sister show, but AMC gave it another season. You know why? Because shows need time to grow and find an audience. AMC, at least, is letting it breathe. It would be great if Disney did that. But they are a corporation and they don’t actually give a darn about us (pretend that “darn” is a much stronger word).
I’m going to end this with fan reactions, starting with my own. Good job Lucasfilm and Disney. You really showed your true colors today.
I just remembered how Star Wars Resistance had the first on screen queer couple and a BIPOC cast in front of and behind the scenes and that is so often buried by Star Wars showing they just don’t want shows that aren’t white and straight

The worst part about hearing The Acolyte is cancelled is this will absolutely impact my ability to enjoy any more new projects for SW. I feel like everything I went through while the show was on was for nothing. I don’t enjoy being depressed and cynical about this fandom 😑
— Mollie Damon (@MollieDamon) August 20, 2024
I HATE THIS. Leslye Headland, the first woman to create a Star Wars series, tapped into something fresh and exciting in the fandom with S1 and while I had my notes she absolutely deserved a second season to let those ideas cook. We all lose with this. https://t.co/Yms50LYwAH

Not to sound utterly defeated but why should I get excited about new Star Wars shows if the worst people on the internet are going to get them canceled
— Mollie 🩵 (@DarthMaullie) August 19, 2024
Half the fandom is either toxic or hates everything. The other half of fandom that actually enjoys the stuff is slowly being trained not get invested or care because it’s all just gonna get canceled anyways.

I’m heartbroken for amandla more than anything else right now. disney just validated all the racists who have spent the past year flinging the most vile shit at her. I can’t imagine how she’s feeling right now.

The GALL to bring out Manny at D23 when you weren’t going to renew his show tbh

The double whammy of hearing Temuera Morrison talk about the lack of hope for Boba’s return because of negativity online, coupled with the news about The Acolyte, speaks to a real issue I see in the TV side of Star Wars. It continues to cater to the absolute worst people.
— Maggie Lovitt (@maggieofthetown) August 19, 2024
how can i be excited for any upcoming star wars shows anymore? how can i get invested in the characters and stories if they are just going to get snatched away?!

I really hate that these days there is no point in starting watching any tv show because it ‘might get canceled’ after one season… https://t.co/97eTN8QIJU

The Acolyte being cancelled is just another example of toxic internet hate. The show never got a chance to breathe and half the people hating on it never even watched an episode.
It’s not my favorite piece of Star Wars content but it certainly didn’t deserved to be axed. pic.twitter.com/xAb8BTRT0D

THERE ARE TWO ACOLYTE NOVELS COMING OUT NEXT YEAR, AN ART BOOK AND A DAMN GUIDE WHAT DO MEAN THE SHOW GOT CANCELLED ????

of all the star wars streaming shows this one had MANY threads left to weave. Why do we have three seasons of Mando Stares at Walls when we could be telling new stories https://t.co/yiUEZu0t8f
