Star Wars: The Acolyte is the latest addition to the franchise and has generated significant controversy. Even before its release, the project faced criticism for perceived “wokeness” and some contentious remarks from the cast and crew.
Upon its release, despite a substantial $180 million budget, the show was criticized for its lack of quality in writing, acting, costumes, and overall execution. Fans have described the main storyline as unremarkable, likening it to a lower-quality retread of Anakin’s origin story.
Following scandals and poor viewership, The Acolyte was canceled, a decision that surprised few. Although Lucasfilm and Disney did not provide official reasons for the cancellation, insider reports suggest it was driven by financial considerations rather than ideological debates.
In response, fans launched several social media campaigns, with hashtags like #SaveTheAcolyte and #RenewTheAcolyte trending on X. Additionally, a Change.org petition was created in an effort to bring the show back.
The petition has recently achieved a significant milestone, gathering over 50,000 signatures—53,955 at the time of writing. This level of support indicates a strong desire among fans to see Osha’s and Qimir’s stories continue. While fan campaigns have succeeded in the past, either through other studios picking up shows or crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter, the challenge remains.
Each new milestone in the petition increases the chances of renewal, but with Disney facing financial constraints and the need for at least $180 million to fund a new season, the future of the show remains uncertain.
In contrast, a petition to de-canonize The Acolyte has only garnered 485 signatures and is growing at a slower pace. Both petitions face an uphill battle with the studio.
