The Diplomat showrunner Debora Cahn has detailed Kate’s (Keri Russell) main suspect for season 1’s terrorist attack, explaining how season 2 will showcase the difficulties of trying to prove her claims. The mystery of a British aircraft carrier destroyed off the coast of Iran drives the narrative mystery of season 1, with Kate trying to find out who could have been responsible for the terrorist act. The Diplomat season 1 ended with her learning Prime Minister Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) was likely behind the attack, just before a car bomb explodes, threatening the life of her husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell).

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cahn explained how Kate’s suspicions that Trowbridge was behind season 1’s terrorist attack and subsequent car bombing will be difficult to prove due to communications between US and UK intelligence.
