Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cahn explained how Kate’s suspicions that Trowbridge was behind season 1’s terrorist attack and subsequent car bombing will be difficult to prove due to communications between US and UK intelligence. The showrunner hints the protagonist will need to carefully navigate international information channels in order to bring Trowbridge to justice without alerting him of her suspicions. Check out what Cahn had to say below:
Kate’s pretty sure it’s the prime minister, so how do you prove that when you’re inside the U.K. One of the unique things about the relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. is that we share intelligence. So we have a deal that we don’t spy on each other. And even if we wanted to, it would be really hard because we share everything.
What Kate’s New Investigation Means For The Diplomat Season 2
She’ll Have The Proceed With Caution
While Hal’s life was in danger during the end of season 1, The Diplomat season 2 trailer revealed him to be alive, still with Kate seemingly for publicity reasons after their relationship degraded. Netflix’s description hints the pair will be allies in the forthcoming episodes, only able to trust one another now knowing the conspiracy stretches into the UK government. Even so, the protagonist’s search for justice means she’ll need to be more careful than ever before, especially with Trowbridge seemingly wanting escalated conflict with Russia.
While Kate has made many allies overseas, like UK Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and CIA station chief Eidra Park (Ali Ahn), she’ll need to discern just how much she can share her suspicions given the seriousness of her accusation. If she offers information to the wrong party, it could spell disaster for her investigation, even if she finds concrete evidence pointing to Trowbridge’s involvement. Season 2 also needs to address the Dolphin 3-6 code in season 1’s post-credits, potentially setting the stage for the PM’s next move.
Our Take On Kate’s Investigation In The Diplomat Season 2
Not Everything Will Be As Simple As It Seems
Since Kate will need to navigate both UK and US intelligence communications in order to gather proof of Trowbridge’s terrorist links, season 2 will likely focus on her leading this double life within the embassy. But, while she might get the proof she’s looking for, the power the Prime Minister holds means her search for justice won’t be as simple as proving his guilt. Instead, The Diplomat will likely show the complexities of her accusation, even if she’s right about him being the mastermind behind what’s happening.
