Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) in The Diplomat talking angrily on her phoneThe Diplomat has been renewed for season 3 ahead of the release of season 2, the announcement also confirming a key location change for the Keri Russell-led thriller. The espionage series has been a major hit with Netflix, who previously confirmed The Diplomat season 2 less than two weeks after season 1 became a streaming success. The show follows Russell’s Kate Wyler, the newly appointed US ambassador to the UK, as she investigates international crises and terrorist conspiracies, including one that will continue into season 2.

Now, TheWrap has confirmed The Diplomat season 3 is currently in production, the announcement coming from Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria at Los Angeles’ Bloomberg Screentime Conference. Season 3 will be shooting both in London and New York City. This renewal and change in location comes before season 2’s premiere on Netflix at the end of October, alongside news creator Debora Cahn will be returning as showrunner. Russell, Janice Williams, and Alex Graves will also be returning as executive producers. Check out what Cahn had to say about the show’s early renewal below:

After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY. Best of both worlds — filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.

What The Diplomat’s Early Renewal Means For The Thriller Series

The Diplomat‘s early renewal comes just two days after Netflix confirmed The Night Agent season 2 will arrive in 2025, alongside an early season 3 renewal for that show as well. Both are part of a growing subgenre of popular action thrillers on streaming services, often involving political intrigue, dramatized realism, and high-octane action tied to some form of conspiracy. Others in the genre include Prime Video’s Reacher, which was recently renewed for season 4, and The Terminal List, as well as Apple TV+’s Criminal Record.
