The Lord Of The Rings returning for more prequels, exec confirms

It’s been confirmed that more The Lord of the Rings prequel tales are on the way following rumours of a series being cancelled.

Without question, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are some of the most popular novels of all time and continue to inspire generations with tales of good vs. evil. Moreover, fans not only have an animated prequel movie to look forward to this year but also a prequel live-action movie about Gollum directed by Andy Serkis in 2026.

One of the more recent prequels is the Amazon Prime series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power which made its debut on the streaming platform in 2022.

It’s fair to say that the first season of The Rings of Power received a mixed reaction from fans but it has recently concluded its second season with a third on the way. In our review of The Rings of Power season two, we said it’s “Hit and miss, but still more than entertaining.”

As reported by Dexerto (via Variety), there were rumours that we won’t be getting a third season following a drop in viewership but Amazon Studios boss, Jennifer Salke has confirmed otherwise.

Over the two seasons so far, there have been 16 episodes. Amazon Studios had previously stated that The Rings of Power will have at least 50 episodes over many seasons. However, whether or not that goal is achieved can depend on many factors.

When asked by Variety whether there was any change to the 50-episode commitment, Salke replied: “I don’t think so. [That] commitment is never the thing that’s driving what we’re doing.”

“We’ll continue to make the show as long as we see global customers loving it and watching it to the point where – it is a business. Obviously, we need a large amount of people showing up. And there are a large amount of people, so there’s no debate about whether or not the show will continue,” she explained.
