The Rings of Power season 2 was met with a primarily positive response from fans and critics, especially for the final two episodes. The season put the majority of its focus on the plotline featuring Sauron and Celebrimbor, with the Elves of Middle-earth taking up the bulk of the screen time. This left Númenor’s narrative to be relegated to the background, though there were still some pivotal moments throughout the eight episodes. Notably, Míriel, the rightful heir to Númenor, had her throne usurped by Ar-Pharazôn, a malicious politician who’s taken control of the capital city.
The Rings Of Power Season 2’s Finale Introduces Narsil, Aragorn’s Future Sword
Míriel Gifts Narsil To Elendil Before He Departs From Númenor
Míriel and Elendil are Numenor’s greatest hope going forward, though the latter was forced to flee the city to avoid execution at the hands of Ar-Pharazôn in the Rings of Power season 2 ending. Before his departure, he received a crucial gift from Míriel: Narsil, the longsword that Aragorn has reforged in The Lord of the Rings to face Mordor with. The Return of the King makes a big deal out of the reforging of this sword, as it’s a weapon Sauron knows and fears. The reason for this is shown in the movies’ prologue scene, but it will also be displayed in the TV show.
According to Tolkien’s books, Narsil was originally forged during the First Age by a famous Dwarf smith named Telchar of Nogrod, eventually passing to Elendil on Númenor. When the Elves reforged the blade for Aragorn, it was renamed to Andúril or the Flame of the West. Just as Elendil wielded the sword during the War of the Last Alliance at the end of the Second Age, Aragorn wielded the reforged version during the War of the Ring, making it one of the most famous weapons in The Lord of the Rings‘ complete timeline.
Narsil Is The Sword Isildur Will Use To Defeat Sauron (Probably In The Rings Of Power Season 5)
Isildur Defeating Sauron Should Be The Rings Of Power’s Climax Scene
Isildur took Narsil’s shattered hilt and used it to slice off the One Ring from Sauron’s finger
The Fellowship of the Ring movie famously begins with a scene showing the climactic battle at the end of the Second Age, fought between the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and the forces of Sauron. The Last Alliance was led by the likes of High King Gil-galad, Elrond, and Elendil, who managed to largely defeat the Dark Lord’s forces. The kings of Elves and Men, Gil-galad and Elendil, fought Sauron on the battlefield, but both perished in combat under the might of evil. This is when Narsil shattered, giving Elendil’s son Isildur the chance to make himself a hero.
Isildur took Narsil’s shattered hilt and used it to slice off the One Ring from Sauron’s finger, thus ending the battle. However, this moment was followed by Isildur refusing to destroy the One Ring, eventually leading to the events of The Lord of the Rings. The shattered remains of Narsil serve as a reminder to Aragorn of Isildur’s weakness, and a crucial part of his story arc in the movies is realizing that he won’t be destined to make the same mistakes as his ancestor.
The Rings of Power has been planned as a five-season series from Amazon to begin with, meaning the War of the Last Alliance will likely be the subject of season 5. It seems like season 3 will cover the Downfall of Numenor, while season 4 should leave some time for Elendil and Isildur to establish their kingdoms in Middle-earth, rebuilding the civilizations of Men. The defeat of Sauron should be the show’s climactic moment, so having it at the end of season 5 seems most likely.
The Rings Of Power Season 1 Already Teased Narsil’s Introduction
Narsil Was Seen In The Background Of The Rings Of Power Season 1
In The Rings of Power season 1, episode 4, audiences caught a glimpse of Narsil for the first time. In one of Galadriel’s scenes in Numenor, Narsil can be seen resting in the background, leaning against a wall. It speaks to how iconic the sword is in The Lord of the Rings films that it was notable enough to be picked up on as a background easter egg, and it’s even more exciting to see it finally given to Elendil. The Rings of Power still has a long way to go, and Narsil is just one of the many things audiences have to look forward to.
