The fight scene between Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Natassia Malthe’s Typhoid Mary is both absurd and hilarious at the same time.

Two decades have passed since Jennifer Garner put down Elektra’s pair of Okinawan sais following the critical and commercial failure of her 2005 spinoff movie. No one expected that the character, at least her version, would be revived in Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

There are a lot of flaws in the Elektra movie, and it became a learning experience for the filmmakers and producers not to go down that path again. Garner did an excellent job at playing the female anti-hero, but the story and execution lacked in several aspects.

Fox Ruined Jennifer Garner’s Elektra In One Absurd Fight Scene

Jennifer Garner played Elektra in Ben Affleck’s 2003 movie Daredevil. The actress confessed she wasn’t interested in returning for a spinoff but because of contractual obligations, she had to wield those pointy sais one more time.

As everyone already knows, the picture failed for many reasons, and the most obvious one was that it wasn’t ready. The studio forced the release of Elektra, which consequently killed Garner’s career. Another issue was that they made it to PG-13. Elektra, as a character, will always be violent. There’s no other way to tell her story other than to make it bloody and brutal.

Take this scene, for instance. Elektra wields one of her sais, throws it across the bush, and lands on the forehead of Typhoid Mary, played by Natassia Malthe. The audience would expect a gush of blood, but no – she disappears as a billow of dark green smoke envelopes her. It was established that constituents of the Hand disappear into clouds of smoke when killed for PG-13 reasons.

Not only was it aesthetically disgusting to look at, but it also didn’t justify Elektra’s rigorous training. Imagine spending hours bulking up and practicing with your weapons only for your enemies to die without bleeding.

Elektra And Typhoid Mary Need A Rematch

For starters, Elektra is a highly trained assassin who uses a pair of sais as her trademark weapon. As a skilled martial artist, she is very familiar with ninjutsu, aikido, and karate. She can also work with katana, daggers, and shuriken. The character is often associated with Daredevil, but she is actually an interesting figure on her own.

Typhoid Mary, on the other hand, can be considered a match for Elektra, except she’s suffering from grave mental illness. While she’s well-versed in martial arts, she also possesses telekinetic powers and pyrokinesis, the ability to set things on fire.

That being said, they surely need a rematch – to watch them fight in an R-rated scene would be of epic scale. It’s also a good thing that they brought back Elektra in Deadpool & Wolverine. She deserves a better story, or at least, a fitting conclusion.

Elektra is currently available to watch on Disney+.
