Tyler, The Creator is ready to eat his words and serve the apology to the rap god himself, Eminem.
In a recent episode of Mavericks with Mav Carter, Tyler opened up about how his younger self might have been a little too quick to bash Em’s “Recovery” album back in 2010.
At the time, Tyler, a massive Eminem fan, didn’t hold back in letting the world know he wasn’t feeling it. But now, with a bit more perspective (and perhaps some Netflix therapy), he’s realising just how important that album was for Eminem’s journey to sobriety.
I was a big Eminem fan when that album came out, and I fucking hated it. I hated it publicly, like, “This shit is whack”. I didn’t like it. And after watching [Netflix’s “Painkillers”], I felt so bad about those tweets because thinking from his perspective, someone like me publicly saying that stuff and him getting off drugs and being clean and getting to a point in his life that’s behind him, he probably felt like I was attacking him. I thought I was just like, “I don’t like music”.
Now, Tyler understands that the album wasn’t just music; it was a milestone in Eminem’s journey. The younger rapper makes it clear that Eminem’s influence on his own music runs deep. From learning how to rap to mastering the art of storytelling, Eminem was a mentor from afar. Tyler’s remorse is real, and if he ever crosses paths with Slim Shady, he’s determined to apologise face-to-face.
Now, I feel so bad about saying that stuff because my perspective was so limited. I love him. That dude taught me how to rap. I learned how to put words together in rhythm because of some of the Eminem stuff I was hearing, storytelling and things like that. So after watching that show, I felt so terrible about some of the things I said about that Recovery album cause I realised that was a big step and meant a lot to him, and my fucking young, stupid ass is like, “Ughh, I wanna hear ‘Same Song And Dance’. And I loved “The Eminem Show”. I felt terrible. If I ever see him, I wanna tell him that in person.
Could we see a meeting of the minds between these two groundbreaking artists? If that happens, it’s bound to be a powerful moment that fans of both Tyler and Eminem would love to witness. And, maybe, later, listen to music they make. Would you be excited about their collaboration?
