However, there’s something notably different between him and Idaho, who was played with charm and charisma by Jason Momoa in the 2021 Dune movie. Desmond Hart carries devious secrets and seems intent on manipulating those around him. Set roughly 10,000 years earlier on the Dune timeline, the characters in the HBO prequel are going to drastically alter the scope of the world, preparing the Known Universe for what it looks like by the time Paul Atreides is born. Given that he isn’t in the books, Desmond’s role in the grander scheme is the hardest to predict.
Desmond Hart Is The Only Soldier To Survive An Attack On Arrakis
Desmond Hart Somehow Survived A Deadly Attack When All Others Died

Desmond Hart arrives at the Emperor’s palace on Selusa Secundus, stating that he was the only survivor of an attack on Arrakis. The Emperor believed this attack was carried out by Fremen forces and was orchestrating an alliance with House Richese for a fleet of ships to help aid the production of spice on Arrakis, preventing further threats. Desmond claims that the attack wasn’t actually by Fremen but was carried out by allies of the Imperium, seemingly as a ploy to force the Emperor to arrange the marriage of his daughter, Princess Ynez.
Desmond Hart’s Connection To Emperor Javicco Corrino Explained
Desmond Hart Seeks To Gain The Emperor’s Trust

Desmond has now arrived at Emperor Javicco’s home to win over his trust. The Emperor seemed to have some knowledge of who Desmond Hart was before meeting him, but it’s unclear if the two have any history together. Later in the episode, they meet by the water and discuss the situation. Hart claims that House Richese is among the various threats to the Emperor, who agrees that he doesn’t feel right about the marriage despite being advised by his Truthsayer, Kasha. Desmond states that the attack on Arrakis was merely a symptom of a more significant problem.
Desmond Hart suggests to Javicco that he’s losing his grasp on the Imperium. He believes it is because the leaders of the Great Houses are under the control of their Truthsayers, though he doesn’t say this just yet. It’s true in the episode that Javicco goes against his better judgment to listen to Kasha, arranging a marriage with an untrustworthy ally to obtain more military strength. Kasha enforces this marriage because she supports Valya Harkonnen and the Sisterhood’s plot to plant a Sister on the throne, which would be Princess Ynez, after her training.
Is Travis Fimmel’s Character A Villain In Dune: Prophecy?
Desmond Hart Is Probably A Villain, But The Sisterhood Aren’t Heroes Either

Dune: Prophecy episode 1’s ending sees Travis Fimmel kill a small child through some mysterious power, which appears to be an act of villainy. However, in the world of Dune, it’s always a bit more complicated than that. Understanding what he says and what Javicco sees in the hologram is crucial to breaking down what’s known about the original character. Desmond Hart not only survived the attack from the Imperium allies that killed all of his men but he was also swallowed up underground by a sandworm and lived.
it’s important to note that all of these elements also pertain to the Mother Superior’s vision at the beginning of the episode: a sandworm, burning skin, blood, and the death of a noble.
Desmond Hart now has some mysterious ability to cause someone’s skin to burn, and he seems to do this to both Pruwet Richese and Kasha. Before killing Pruwet, he states that he’s been “given a great power.” Now, it’s important to note that all of these elements also pertain to the Mother Superior’s vision at the beginning of the episode: a sandworm, burning skin, blood, and the death of a noble. Desmond Hart could somehow be related to the “Tiran-Arafel,” which is used in the show to refer to an existential threat to humanity.
“Arafel” is a term from the original Dune books that refers to a “cloud-darkness at the end of the universe.”
So, yes and no. Travis Fimmel’s Desmond Hart is likely the villain of Dune: Prophecy, as the show is framed from the perspective of Valya Harkonnen and the Sisterhood. But the Sisterhood, which is turning into the Bene Gesserit audiences know from Dune, aren’t exactly protagonists in this universe either, and even among their own ranks, there’s some debate surrounding the morality of genetically engineering world leaders. Valya and the Sisterhood seek control, and Desmond wishes to prevent that, but he may go to even worse extremes to do so.
