The Last Airbender is filled with memorable characters, and one of the most iconic was Toph Beifong. She became an integral part of Team Avatar, and Aang would never have mastered all four elements and types of bending without her help. She was an incredibly important character in the animated show, both to the plot and to the other members of Team Avatar, and she’ll likely be just as important in the live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender. Given she’s such a central character, learning about Toph and the actor who will play her in The Last Airbender season 2 is essential.
Toph Is An Earthbender Joining Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2
Toph Beifong joined the original animated Last Airbender in book 2. Likewise, Toph will make her debut in Netflix’s The Last Airbender season 2. In the original show, Toph was an earthbender and the daughter of a wealthy family from the Earth Kingdom. Despite being born into nobility, Toph resented her parents because they coddled her, mostly because she was born blind. Toph could “see” by using her earthbending, but her parents didn’t understand her ability, so they treated her like a fragile child.
As a result of her parents coddling her, Toph became fiercely independent. She would often sneak out of her house to fight in an underground earthbending club as the Blind Bandit, and she always wanted to explore the world on her own. Eventually, Aang was able to convince Toph to become his earthbending teacher, and she joined Team Avatar. Even as a member of the Gaang, however, Toph still struggled with learning to be vulnerable around her friends. Toph will likely take on the same role in the live-action Last Airbender, and she’ll likely have all of her incredible powers as well.
Toph’s Powers In Avatar: The Last Airbender Explained
Though Toph was blind, she still had a way of seeing the world. She was such a skilled earthbender that Toph could detect vibrations in the ground and tell exactly where someone or something was. Toph’s ability to detect vibrations was so strong that she could detect structures hidden hundreds of feet below the ground and even tell if someone was lying based on their heartbeat. Her vision did have some drawbacks, though: Toph could only see something if it made contact with the ground, so she couldn’t see anything while riding Appa, and she couldn’t see through some materials, like sand or water.
