George R.R. Martin is involved in the early development of a Game of Thrones movie, which might turn his focus away from his unfinished books.
George R.R. Martin will reportedly have a larger role in the development of a Game of Thrones film under Warner Bros. Pictures. While Martin’s role in the film adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire has excited film and TV viewers, it also received some skeptical reactions from his book fans. These fans pointed out that the author is diverting his attention to other projects when he still has two books in his series to complete.

A Song of Ice and Fire series is supposed to have two more novels, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. Martin has been working on the first one for years now. In the absence of Martin’s novel, Game of Thrones came up with its own conclusion to the story, which did not turn out well for the series.

HBO chief Casey Bloys has shared that a Game of Thrones movie is in early development at Warner Bros. Bloys’ revelation came at the press event on Tuesday, where he addressed George R.R. Martin‘s criticism of House of the Dragon Season 2. Bloys shared that Martin would be involved in the development of the film.
Bloys shared that HBO and Martin would read the scripts along with Warner Bros. to find something fun and interesting. Bloys assured that they would find a story worthy of being released in the theaters and become a major spectacle. Bloys shared (via Variety):
They’re [Warner Bros] going to develop idea… We’ll see if it’s good. We’ll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. I mean, that’s the point of development, you see is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun.
Fans have one major issue with this announcement and they took their concerns to X. One of the fan comments called Martin an “elite procrastinator,” sharing that he would rather be involved in the movies but finish the books.
Fans complained about how Martin has put his focus on all other things except finishing his series A Song of Ice and Fire. Martin has yet to release the final two novels of his series. Some of the fan reactions read:
GRRM is an elite procrastinator. He’d rather do anything but finish the books

It’s not like he has 2 books to finish

Martin shared in 2022 that he was done with approximately three-quarters of the book. However, he also revealed that he was ripping apart chapters from the ever-growing pages of The Winds of Winters (via Penguin Random House). Many believe that Martin’s confidence took a hit after the ridiculous expectations from Game of Thrones fans.

George R.R. Martin‘s sixth novel, The Winds of Winter, in A Song of Ice and Fire series, has been delayed several times. Even the HBO show, Game of Thrones, managed to outpace Martin’s slow writing of the book. According to Martin, the novel is approximately more than 1,500 pages long and he had written almost 1,100 to 1,200 pages (via THR).
He had provided a hard estimate on the novel’s release date several times, but the author failed to finish the work on said time. During an interview with Vanity Fair in 2022, he revealed that he had given up hope on predicting the end of the novel. He shared:
I’m making progress, but I’ve given up on any hope of predicting the end. Every time I do, I don’t make it and everybody gets mad at me, and there’s no sense. It’ll be done when it’s done.
During his appearance at Oxford Writers’ House in August 2024, Martin was asked if he’d change anything from the books. In response, he humorously addressed the delay of The Winds of Winter. He shared (via GamesRadar+):
I don’t know, I could probably change more than one thing. If I could change one thing about one of my books I’d have them finished.
Fans can now enjoy the screen adaptations of Martin’s works, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, streaming on Max.
