Kayce in Yellowstone season 5, episode 9 looking sad while Michelle Pfeiffer is in Ant-Man and the Wasp QuantumaniaYellowstone director Christina Alexandra Voros explains how the upcoming spinoff The Madison connects to the main series. Voros has helmed several episodes of the hit Western drama, most recently directing season 5, episode 9, which explained what happened to John Dutton after Kevin Costner’s exit from the series. Voros will also be stepping behind the camera for The Madison, which stars three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer.

In an interview with Variety, Voros explained the connection between Yellowstone and The Madison, noting the key common thread is the landscape since both series take place in Montana. Still, in the quote below, the director notes that the upcoming spinoff is a new story told through a different lens. Read Voros’ full comments below:

It’s such a different story. The common ground is the landscape. We are in Montana, but it is seen through a completely different lens, so it feels like another facet of this cut stone that has been polished. There are parallels in the scope of landscape and a human being’s place in that space, but it’s coming at it from a completely different point of view.

Official reports describe The Madison as “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection.” The story focuses on a New York family in the Madison River valley of central Montana, but little else is confirmed outside that general logline. The Madison also starsLost alum Matthew Fox, Suits star Patrick J. Adams, Beau Garrett, Amiah Miller, and Elle Chapman. There are also reports that veteran actor Kurt Russell is joining the project, though that has not yet been officially announced.

Though it may be loosely connected by story or theme, early reports indicate viewers won’t have to follow Yellowstone to enjoy The Madison .

The spinoff is aiming for a 2025 release date, with franchise creator Taylor Sheridan, Voros, and Pfeiffer among the executive producers. The project, which hails from MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, and Bosque Ranch Productions, looks to be in the vein of Sheridan’s various spinoffs. The main Western series is in a bit of an uncertain state, with Yellowstone season 6 rumored but so far unconfirmed. It may be the case that more links are still yet to be revealed between the Duttons and The Madison. But as of right now, the spinoff sounds like a largely standalone drama focused on a new family.

Yellowstone season 5 part 2 airs Sundays at 8 PM ET on the Paramount Network.
