Long before her battle with Donald Trump, Kristen Stewart was getting an early start in Hollywood, appearing in the 2002 film, Panic Room. We’re not talking about Lady Gaga’s actual panic room in her home… The film was quite the hit, with Jodie Foster taking on the lead role. She passed on some iconic scripts in the past, but made sure not to miss this opportunity.
We’ll take a look back at what went on behind the scenes, like Nicole Kidman only lasting a few weeks. Jodie Foster would step in and thrive in the role.
However, behind the scenes, things were troubling for the veteran as she slept between takes and during lunch breaks. Prepping for the film was not easy for Foster…
Nicole Kidman Was Forced To Back Out Of Panic Room Due To A Shoulder Injury
Speaking alongside Kristen Stewart on Variety’s Actors on Actors, Nicole Kidman discussed her brief stint in Panic Room. According to Kidman, she loved the project, however, was forced to withdraw from the role due to an injury.
Kidman explained, “We were meant to work together. I remember [director] David Fincher saying, ‘Oh, my God, we have discovered the most incredible actress.’ And then I got injured and ended up not playing your mama.”
Despite her brief time on-set, Kristen Stewart still had a blast with Kidman and was grateful for the way the veteran actress treated her at the time, when she was a less established face in the business.
“I was a little guy but — it’s an interesting time to meet somebody and have a vivid memory of it because the way that you treat kids, is so telling of you — of anyone. I just felt like I was buds with you and that says so much.”
Stewart continued, “You were so nice to me and I had the best time. It was a short period of time but I was always like, oh yeah, she’s one of my friends.”
Despite the way things turned out, Kidman credited Foster for stepping in and doing a brilliant job with the role.
Jodie Foster Immediately Agreed To Do Panic Room Once Nicole Kidman Had Left The Project
For Jodie Foster, saying yes to the script was a no-brainer and an immediate decision. In fact, Foster didn’t even have to read the script, given that she was already aware of the plot and what it entailed.
“I love Fincher, have known him for a long time, have wanted to work with him for ages and I followed what he does. So I knew of the project immediately, had already read the script and had friends on the movie too, so frankly, I came to THEM as quickly as they came to me and offered my services.”According to her words with Female, Foster also had a clear schedule at the time, which happened to work perfectly with the film.
“So I happened to be available, and I didn’t have any plans for the rest of the year,” she said. The 2002 film received great reviews, getting a 76% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, the thriller was a major success at the box office, generating a near $200 million, off a $48 million budget.
Foster in particular thrived in the role but behind the scenes, things weren’t exactly easy for the actress.
Jodie Foster Had A Tough Time On-Set Due To Her Pregnancy
As if prepping for such a dark role wasn’t difficult enough, Foster had to endure troubling headaches during the first two weeks of the shoot. She would also find out that she was pregnant at the time, adding to the difficulties. The actress recalls skipping lunch in order to get extra sleep.
“I did a lot of sleeping, and I remember Kristen [Stewart, who plays her daughter] made fun of me constantly because every time she’d ask me what I had for lunch, it would be: ‘Well actually I slept through lunch’ I did a lot of sleeping and sometimes I would sleep in between set ups.”
Despite the struggle behind the scenes, Foster managed to bring it together in front of the cameras, putting on yet another great performance.
