In a recent appearance on the TODAY show, Matthew McConaughey talked all things Texas and even dished out a tip for eating one of his favorite recipes.

Welcomed by the University of Texas Longhorn Band, UT’s minister of culture sat down with TODAY hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager to discuss life in the Lone Star State. McConaughey explained that he moved back to his home state when he and wife Camila Alves were ready to start a family.

“I wanted them to have what I grew up around,” he said. “I think there’s a solid amount of common sense that runs through … it’s un-talked about, but we understand it here.”

In honor of its upcoming release in paperback, McConaughey also spoke about his memoir “Greenlights.” Released just over four years ago, the star said he is just now reading his work for the first time cover to cover.

Alves then joined the show to give a cooking tutorial on one of the couple’s favorite recipes: spicy corn from Opie’s BBQ in Spicewood.

As Alves showed Kotb and Bush Hager how to mix the corn, jalapeño, green chile and cheese, McConaughey popped back in to demonstrate his tactic for getting the best bite. He dipped a piece of sausage to the bottom of the pan, a method he said he devised to cover the entire piece of meat in elote goodness.

“The order that the food touches your mouth matters,” he said.
