On the latest episode of The Official Marvel Podcast, Locke elaborated more on the deeper layers of Agatha All Along’s massive Wiccan reveal after nearly a year of rumors and speculation by the MCU audience. When looking at Billy’s trajectory in Agatha All Along, Locke stressed that the character’s prior facade had genuine elements, as he added the following:
Teen of the first 5 episodes is very different to Billy of episode 6 onwards… because we had a lot of discussions about whether the fanboy energy of the first 5 episodes was all fake, but I never saw it as – I think that was still a big part of him, like he was still loving it, and having a great time. But it was then like the lifting of the mask almost, post that “you’re just like your mother” line, which always gives me chills whenever I see it/hear it – and it’s like, when the mask’s up, the game’s up, the lie is over – the con, as Agatha would say.
What Joe Locke’s Billy Maximoff Comments Mean
Based on Locke’s perspective regarding how he portrayed Billy, Agatha All Along has maintained a sincerity toward the Wiccan and Agatha relationship from the start while now adding complications to it along the way. Even though the MCU views Agatha primarily as a supervillain, her spinoff show has made it clear that there is more than meets the eye. That also applies to Billy in this case, which is why there is a lot of investment in his storyline.
In the end, one of the biggest appeals of WandaVision that showrunner Jac Schaeffer carried over to Agatha All Along is the complex characters, and the fact that not everything is simply black and white. The idea of Billy actually being at least partially genuine about his admiration for Agatha while also knowing the threat that she posed to his mother, thus being a rival to her, is one of the many reasons why Agatha All Along’s Billy story is as compelling as it is. Whether or not Billy and Agatha will be on the same side by the end of the series remains to be seen.
