How Do Artists Qualify For Induction Into The Country Music Hall Of Fame?
Who will join the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2025? Before we introduce this yearâs inductees, letâs take a minute to explain the HOFâs qualifications.
The CMHOF inducts individuals in three distinct categories each year. Typically, only one person (or duo/group) gets inducted per category, except in the event of a tie. If a tie occurs, both nominees will be inducted together.
The categories, as explained by the CMHOF website, include:
Non-Performer â This category rotates between a Recording and/or Touring Musician, Songwriter, or Non-Performer every three years. Guitarist James Burton joined the Hall as the Recording and/or Touring Musician inductee in 2024.
Modern Era â A Modern Era artist becomes eligible for induction 20 years after they reach national prominence. Toby Keith joined the Hall as the Modern Era inductee in 2024.
Veterans Era â A Veterans Era artist becomes eligible for induction 40 years after they reach national prominence. John Anderson joined the Hall as the Veterans Era inductee in 2025.
To avoid sympathy votes, candidates are not eligible for induction the year after their death. However, if voting already occurred before their death, they still qualify.
That exact instance happened with last yearâs (2024) Modern Era inductee, Toby Keith. He died on February 5, but voting for the HOF class concluded before then.
Vince Gill Reveals Inductees Joining The Country Music Hall Of Fame In 2025
Considering the prestige surrounding the Country Music Hall of Fame, fans always look forward to the big moment when the new inductees are announced.
HOF member Vince Gill revealed the 2025 class of inductees joining the Country Music Hall of Fame during a short ceremony on Tuesday morning (March 25).
The CMAâs official YouTube channel live-streamed the event. Keep reading to see the new inductees!
Non-Performer â Tony Brown
Tony Brown is world-renowned as a record producer and piano player. Heâs played for big names such as Emmylou Harris, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Elvis Presley.
However, most know Brown for his work as a record producer for legendary acts such as George Strait, Reba McEntire, and Vince Gill.
Gill shared a personal story about how Brown encouraged him to record his emotional song, âGo Rest High On That Mountain.â Gill remains grateful that Brown pushed him to record the track.
When Brown took to the podium, he said he felt âblown awayâ to be joining the ranks of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Veterans Era â June Carter Cash
June Carter Cashâs family group, The Carter Family, joined the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970 (her mother, Maybelle, was a member). Her husband, Johnny Cash, joined the ranks in 1980.
Now, June herself shall receive her rightful place in the Country Music Hall of Fame as the Veterans Era inductee for 2025. The Hall will forever highlight her accomplishments as a songwriter, comedian, singer, and instrumentalist.
June, who passed away in 2003, sadly couldnât see herself join the Hall of Fame. However, her children, John Carter Cash and Carlene Carter attended the inductee announcement ceremony.
John Carter mentioned how the HOF rotunda displays the lyrics from âWill the Circle Be Unbroken?â The Carter Family recorded one of the most popular versions of the beloved hymn. June continued to share the song throughout her career, and John Carter believes she may have performed it more than anyone else in history.
June both carried and created a legacy, with John Carter remarking, âShe carried the torch for country music history with her through her lifetimeâŚâ
Modern Era â Kenney Chesney
Kenny Chesney released his debut album in 1994 and quickly became one of the top country artists of the â90s and beyond. Heâs now sold over 30 million albums, has numerous #1 songs, and continues to draw massive crowds to his stadium shows.
Now, Chesney will be the first country artist to have a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere later this year.
As he spoke at the podium, Chesney recalled his past playing bluegrass songs and Carter Family classics. He said his college-aged self would never believe that years later, heâd be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame with June Carter Cash.
The honorees will officially join the Hall during a Medallion Ceremony in October.
Congratulations to everyone joining the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2025! Watch the full inductee announcement ceremony below.
