Camila Morrone may be on a balmy “friend honeymoon” with Kaia Gerber at the tropical Palm Heights Grand Cayman hotel, but the internet can not stop fixating on a viral rumour alleging her “worst date” with ex-boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio. For the uninitiated, a parody pop-culture account satirising film news titled ‘Le Cinéphiles’ wrote a falsified tweet in 2022 pretending the Daisy Jones & The Six star had provided an exclusive quote detailing “the worst date of my life”. Read Camila Morrone’s “statement” below:

The tweet, stylised to appear as a legitimate news alert, read: “BREAKING: Leonardo DiCaprio’s ex-girlfriend, Camila Morrone details the “worst date of my life” with the actor”. “He rented out a whole cinema, and made me watch every single ‘STAR WARS’ movie while he ran around with his lightsaber pretending to fight bad guys,” the anonymously-owned account posted.

Naturally, this evocative image of the Oscar winner running around a theatre cosplaying as a Jedi much to the dismay of a disgruntled Morrone was enough to pique the interest of netizens. The tweet has recently seen an uptick in shares, reaching a far wider audience than the initial 7 million impressions it received at the time of posting.

And while the vision of DiCaprio eschewing his signature incognito uniform of baseball caps and cargo pants for robes from a galaxy far far away is an entertaining reprieve from the bleak news cycle, we sadly must do our due diligence here and debunk the narrative for what it is. Indeed, Morrone never said this quote, meaning that the story of their Star Wars marathon is a complete fabrication. (That being said, it’s also worth pointing out that the infamous  “No don’t turn 25, you’re so sexy” image is doctored too, if you actually believed DiCaprio was sending Snapchats to his dates.)

Despite this date being a rumour, it wasn’t meant to be between Morrone and DiCaprio, with the couple splitting in August 2022 after four years together. (Yes, a month after the upcoming Gonzo Girl actress celebrated her 25th birthday.)

DiCaprio has since dated Gigi Hadid and is currently in a relationship with Italian supermodel Vittoria Ceretti. It was reported the pair were engaged after she was spotted with a ring on that finger during a date in Los Angeles, but nothing has been confirmed. Regardless, if there’s one thing to glean about this lesson in media literacy, it’s that critical thinking skills (and the force) be with you.
