True Detective star Jodie Foster has been with her wife, Alexandra Edison, for over a decade, but they rarely share much about their super private relationship—except that they’re very in love and supportive of one another. For example, Hedison always posts the most romantic messages about her wife of 10 years on her birthday.
But there’s still a few facts out there. Here’s everything that we have managed to learn about Alexandra Hedison and Jodie Foster.
Who is Alexandra Hedison?
Hedison was born and raised in Los Angeles and is the daughter of well-known actor David Hedison. He famously played friend to James Bond, Felix Leiter, in Live and Let Die and License to Kill. Her mom, Bridget Hedison, worked as a production associate on Dynasty. Naturally, coming from a family in entertainment, Hedison made her way to Hollywood and acted in several shows, including the sci-fi series Prey, Melrose Place, and Lois & Clark.
But she might best be known for playing Dylan Moreland on The L Word in the late 2000s. However, acting was not the life for Hedison, according to an interview with the The New York Times.
“I was supporting myself, but I was miserable,” she said. “Actors need to be front and center all the time. That’s not me.”
She does need creativity. Hedison directed a short film in 2005 called In the Doghouse, which she co-wrote with Moon Unit Zappa. Her more recent short film ALOK premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024. Hedison’s also made a name for herself as a photographer and sells work to private collectors and museums.
And finally, she’s a home designer and was even featured on the 2006 reality TV series Designing Blind. According to the Los Angeles Times, one of her homes in the Hollywood Hills went up for sale for $2.75 million in 2014.
Though Foster is “front and center” as an actor, she has been very supportive of Hedison’s work and attended ALOK’s premiere amid her own press tour for True Detective: Night Country.
“She flew in from New York at four in the morning to get to the festival, so that was amazing,” Hedison told People at the time. “She’s just so incredibly supportive and so happy for me. It’s just amazing she’s here.”
How long have Foster and Hedison been together?
Though the couple can often be found together at events, they tend to keep their private lives private. In 2013, Foster was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, revealing in her acceptance speech that she was a gay woman.
“While I’m here being all confessional, I guess I just have just a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public,” Foster said. “[It’s] a declaration that I’m a little nervous about—but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now. I’m just going to put it out there—loud and proud.”
She added, “I am single.”
Foster went on to talk more about her experience of coming out before doing so in public became the norm, and thanked her former partner Cydney Bernard for her support throughout the years. However, though she joked about being single, she was reportedly already seeing Hedison. The couple was married in April 2014 in a very private ceremony.
“They are very private when they’re around people they don’t know,” a source told People at the time. “But when they’re together, it can be like they’re in their own world.”
The pair were first photographed together in October 2013 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts Inaugural Gala.

What else has Foster said about Hedison?
In 2021, during the Zoom distribution of Golden Globes, Foster won for her supporting role for The Mauritanian. Hedison was by her side, so the actress was able to kiss her wife, before shouting her out in her acceptance speech, saying, “I love my wife! Thank you, Alex, and Ziggy, and Aaron Rodgers.”
Ziggy is the couple’s dog.

More often, it’s Hedison talking about her wife on Instagram. She recently shared shots from their night at the SAG awards, including a picture of Foster with Russell Wilson, who Hedison said she was “eyeing all night.”
And for Foster’s birthday in November, Hedison shared a photo saying in the caption, “Loving you is easy as cake. Happy birthday, beautiful.”
