While American Idol crowned Abi Carter as the latest winner, the show also took a moment to celebrate judge Katy Perry. Although fans enjoyed the lineup of aspiring singers, many soaked in every moment with Perry as she announced she was leaving the show following the season finale. Wanting to get back to the studio and the stage, the producers of American Idol have a massive hole to fill. With Perry leaving behind Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, many have speculated who will take over. And with season 23 kicking off in 2025, fans are offering their own suggestions.
Over the last few months, fans continuously weighed in on who should take over for Perry. Some suggested Jelly Roll while others thought Kelly Clarkson was the right fit. Again, the producers have stayed extremely silent on the matter with rumors suggesting they might be looking at Jon Bon Jovi for American Idol. But for now, it’s all speculation. And with fans continuing to offer suggestions, one person thought the best person was the original judge, Paula Abdul.
Sharing their thoughts online, one fan wrote, “I keep thinking one of the best choices to replace Katy is Paula Abdul. Paula has the nostalgia factor and she has guest judged on the ABC version—Why look no further [than] to bring Paula back? Would anyone love Paula in the judges seat again.”
Paula Abdul Returns To ‘American Idol’ For Special Episode
The fan wasn’t alone as another one added, “Yes. And here’s why. Yeah she’s got nostalgia, she’s seasoned, she’s a dancer, she’s a pop singer, a sensation. The only negative is she never gave much of a critique. Simon did that for everyone. But if she could bring some critique and sass, sure.”
Back during season 22, Abdul did make a surprise appearance. Excited to welcome her back, Executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick said, “It’s a testament to this show’s incredible legacy that we are able to celebrate 20 years of American Idol in this extraordinary way. We are so thrilled to welcome back some of our most beloved alumni from over the years to reunite on the Idol stage.”
With a long way to go before the new season of American Idol, it seems Perry’s job is still on the table as the production weighs all the options.
