Cate has famously kept her kids out of the spotlight, but son Dash could be set to follow in her footsteps.

As one of Australia’s most successful actresses, Cate Blanchett hasn’t just inspired people across the country to follow in her footsteps and pursue a career in film – but one of her children too.

Yahoo Lifestyle can reveal that 22-year-old Dashiell John, the eldest of the star’s four children with husband Andrew Upton, has recently been celebrating the success of his first major movie project becoming a box office hit.

In late 2022, after graduating from film school, Dashiell, who goes by Dash, landed his first job working in production on Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy which was filmed in Sydney. For the five-month shoot, he assisted in the cinematography department, including taking set stills and capturing behind-the-scenes promotional content.

A friend of the family tells Yahoo Lifestyle: “Dash never really told anybody who his mother was, as far as everyone else on set knew he was just a recent graduate that was lucky to land themselves on a [Ryan] Gosling shoot. He didn’t want people to think he was there just because of who his mum is.”

In May 2020, Cate spoke about Dash flying the nest to follow his own dreams. “It is difficult to break away, very difficult, but I am so proud of my son,” she told Italian publication, iO Donna.

Although Cate and Andrew kept Dash and their other three children, Roman Robert, Ignatius Martin and Edith Vivian Patricia, out of the spotlight as they grew up, Dash made a rare red carpet appearance with his mother in April 2023, after wrapping The Fall Guy in Sydney and returning to Europe, where the family are based. The aspiring film marker held his mother’s hand as they attended the Cannes Film Festival.
