A sequel to the superhero horror film Constantine has been in the works for a long time. However, there has been some progress on the project’s script in the last few months.
Speaking to Collider, at the publication’s Producers on Producing Panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, producer Akiva Goldsman offered an update when asked about the highly anticipated sequel. “It’s going fine. I’m writing a script about Constantine 2. It’s good. I hope to have a script for my partners soon,” he said. When asked about how long he’s been working on the project, Goldsman jokingly replied with a “Yes.”
Constantine 2 Was Plagued By Delays
The Constantine sequel was in the early stages of development in 2023 when it was put on hold due to the WGA strike. While the pause led to doubts about the film ever getting off the ground, director Francis Lawrence seemed positive following the strike. “We’ve had many obstacles [with production],” the filmmaker said. “Me, Keanu [Reeves], Akiva [Goldsman] have tried over the years to wrangle some control of the character again because it had been handed over.”
“I think NBC did a TV show, and then J.J. [Abrams] was going to try and do something. And then the regime at DC changed, and they’ve got their plans,” Lawrence continued. “But luckily, we managed to wrangle some control and started working on some ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about. It’s still the very beginning, as the strike put it on hold for a little bit. So we’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving, and dig back in to try and crack it.”
In Feb. 2024, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared the positive sentiment, saying he hopes the film will eventually get made. “I hope it does, because he’s a great character,” he said. “Great in comic books, and it was great making that first movie. It’s such an alternative kind of character.” Comparing Constantine to another character who gains new abilities at a personal cost, he added, “It’s what really attracted me to Madame Web, was the singularity of the character, that idea that she is going to become blind and that she is going to become this other thing was really attractive.”
Released in 2005, Constantine is based on the DC Comics/Vertigo Comics Hellblazer graphic novels. Per the official synopsis, the story follows John Constantine (Reeves), “a cynical exorcist with the ability to perceive and communicate with half-angels and half-demons in their true forms and to travel between Earth and Hell.” The cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, and Peter Stormare.
