Celebrated Yellowstone actor Dabney Coleman has died at the age of 92. The character actor first began finding steady success with his supporting appearances in such iconic ’60s TV shows as The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,The Outer Limits and The Fugitive, the latter of which would serve as the basis for the Harrison Ford movie of the same name. Since then, he has not only brought home an Emmy and Golden Globe win, but also been nominated for a total of six Emmys and three Globes, respectively.
The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Coleman died Thursday, May 16 in his home. The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor leaves behind a storied 63-year career of roles on both the big and small screen, with his daughter, singer Quincy Coleman, sharing the news with the publication. Coleman also shared the following statement regarding her father’s death:
My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity. As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery. A teacher, a hero and a king, Dabney Coleman is a gift and blessing in life and in death as his spirit will shine through his work, his loved ones and his legacy … eternally.
Coleman Leaves Behind An Incredible On-Screen Legacy

Following his early years of steady supporting roles on screen, Coleman would eventually break out into more leading-adjacent roles, beginning with 1980’s 9 to 5, in which he starred as the sexist boss to Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda’s lead characters. He would swiftly follow this up with the acclaimed Dustin Hoffman-led Tootsie, which further cemented his character type of being a comic relief villain. This casting trend would continue in everything from The Muppets Take Manhattan to the Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd-starring movie adaptation of Dragnet.
Despite being best known for this character, Coleman would be given the opportunity to play more diverse roles throughout his career. Some of his more notable include his reunion with Jane Fonda for the Oscar-winning family drama On Golden Pond, in which he played her fiancé, the Matthew Broderick-starring WarGames, in which he starred as a military computer scientist, and the CBS legal drama The Guardian, in which he played the father of Simon Baker’s lead character.

In more recent years, Dabney Coleman went on to find acclaim for more dramatic fare in comparison to his comedic past, namely as a series regular on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, in which he starred as the mentor to Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson. The Emmy and Golden Globe winner also had the opportunity to be part of the Yellowstone universe, guest starring in the season 2 finale as John Dutton Jr., the father of Kevin Costner’s central character. With so many iconic characters across his six-decade-plus career, Coleman’s on-screen presence is sure to be missed by many.
