Eliminated ‘American Idol’ contestant criticizes Katy Perry’s new song: “This can’t be the person who eliminated me”

Back in August 2020, Katy Perry released her sixth studio album Smile. While the album gained praise for Perry’s vocals, the singer continued to focus on American Idol. Having judged the show for several years, Perry helped shape the future of several aspiring artists. But in 2024, she decided to step away from her role on the show and explore her career in music once again. And that same year, she released her newest album 143. With the album featuring songs like “Ok”, it seemed that one former American Idol contestant completely trashed the new song from the Queen of Camp.

In 2019, American Idol kicked off season 17 with Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Katy Perry filling the judge’s chairs. Throughout the competition, the stars met contestants like Steven James. Although having a dream of being on stage, James ended his time on the show when eliminated. While happening over five years ago, James might still have some feelings about it as he released his review of Perry’s song.

Posting a TikTok, James sat in his car while listening to “Ok.” Somewhat shocked by the lyrics and overall sound, the former contestants questioned his time on American Idol. He wrote, “This can’t be the same person who eliminated me on American Idol 5 years ago.”

With his video viewed over two million times, other fans took a moment to share their thoughts on Perry. Comments read, “This is not the same Katy Perry that made teenage dream.” Another fan added, “What in the PBS Kids is happening here.”

Katy Perry Replaced By Carrie Underwood On ‘American Idol’

While Perry continues to expand her career, American Idol announced the singer’s replacement, turning to Carrie Underwood. Having won the show in the past, the country star has sold over 85 million albums. Excited about the opportunity, Underwood focused on her expansive career. “I feel like I’ve been so blessed to obviously be so rooted in country music, but I’ve been able to be a part of many other genres or music as well.” Given some examples, she added, “I mean, I’ve got a song with Papa Roach right now. It’s a lot of fun.”

As for her goal when judging, Underwood promised, “You’re a part of somebody’s story from that moment on. I think it’s important to be honest, but it’s also very important to be kind, so hopefully I can marry all of those together and be a good judge.”
