While ‘True Detective’ season 4 received positive reviews, fans do not accept that it comes close to the brilliance of season 1.
The first season of HBO’s True Detective series was a great addition to the prestige reputation of the brand’s ability to produce some of the best TV shows of all time. The show starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey was another acting showcase for the latter after he won the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club.

He was nominated for an Emmy for his incredible performance in the show. The second and third seasons however did not live up to the brilliance of the first season. While many fans considered the recent fourth season a return to form for the show, they still cannot accept the fact that it has a higher rating than the first season.
Fans Do Not Agree That True Detective Season 4 Is Better than Season 1
Fans believe that season 1 of True Detective is still the best yet despite season 4’s higher ratings
HBO’s anthology series True Detective presented audiences with gritty and dramatic detective stories featuring actors at the top of their game, as they try to unravel mysterious crimes while also battling their inner demons. The first season starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey is considered one of the best HBO titles of all time.
After a comparably underwhelming second and third season, HBO returned with a fourth season with Jodie Foster in the lead. Fans were happy with the latest season and considered it a major improvement over the previous two seasons. However, they do not accept its higher rating than the first season on Rotten Tomatoes.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season has a 91% score and the fourth season has a 92%. The gap is a mere 1% but fans do not agree that the fourth season was as brilliant or even greater than the first season. Here are some of the reactions on X,
Audiences were terribly disappointed with the finale of the fourth season with Culture Crave also stating that it received the lowest rating of the whole series. Additionally, they all agree that season 4 was nowhere close to the first season despite the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
True Detective Season 4 Showrunner Would Love to Do Season 5
After the success of True Detective season 4, season 5 is most likely to happen
True Detective season 4 aired its finale on February 18 and the series as a whole received positive reviews from critics and audiences. It was a significant improvement from the underwhelming previous two seasons. The positive reception of season 4 has increased the chances of the series being renewed for a season 5.
The showrunner of the fourth season Issa López claimed that the finale has given the narrative arcs of all the characters in the new season a closure. However, she is still attracted to the show’s ability to explore the dark and macabre side of the world and people. She expressed her desire to do a fifth season if given the opportunity to do so. She told Variety,
“I think all of them went through a journey that is final. They find themselves at the end, and that’s when you have to let them go — like children — once they find themselves. But on the other hand, yes, I would do another one.
The luxury that this particular series presents is that what makes it is a tone, and a certain way of looking at the world, and to America. And it allows for an exploration of the dark and macabre that I love. So yes, for sure.”
Fans praised the performances of Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the season’s leads. López absolutely has more stories to tell with a new set of characters and it remains to be seen whether the show receives a fifth season. All four seasons of True Detective are streaming on Max.
